Harlem’s Fashion Row 2013: The Movement

by Alvin J. Woods

Harlem’s Fashion Row celebrated its sixth anniversary at the world famous Apollo, advancing creatively rich voices of color.

Seven incredible designers were chosen for the mega-fashion show:

  • Espion – With unexpected combinations of male and female elements, the heirloom-quality label is opulent and sophisticated.
  • Shauntele – As a self-taught designer her collection takes elegant risks with textiles and shapes to create an empowering aesthetic.
  • Evelyn Lambert – Heavily influenced by both her birthplace of Zimbabwe and childhood hometown of London the designer’s innovative collection speaks to the working, travelling and socializing woman.
  • Sandro Romans – The sole menswear designer of HFR studied both fashion and accessory design at FIT. His goal is to make beautifully accessible men’s clothing with a hint of fantasy.
  • Chantelle Waters – The futuristic London-raised designer has become known for her draped cocoon cardigans.
  • Modahnik – Designer Kahindo Mateene has created a collection for the woman who is a global nomad who views fashion as an expression of her individuality.
  • Kimberly Goldson – This “Runway” Season 9 finalist is taking the fashion world by storm. Her collection is geared toward women who want clothing that can be worn from the desk to dinner and beyond.

Following the rousing show of fashion – guests were then prompted to vote for their favorite designer on HFR’s website for an opportunity to show at the next show in September.

HFR Founder, Brandice Henderson has developed a premier event that is sure to remain an uptown stable for many years to come.

Not even a blizzard could stall the white-hot Porsche Design fall/winter 2013 collection show. I strapped up my snow boots and trekked to Center 548 in Chelsea to take in a brand that is known to deliver luxe travel gear. Porsche Design fall/winter 2013 did not disappoint.

Duckie Brown Fall/Winter 2013 Collection

by Alvin J. Woods

Duckie Brown took Industria Studios by storm on the first official day of New York Fashion Week, bringing together fashion elite.

The design team of Steven Cox and Daniel Silver delivered a rousing menswear collection of rich color palettes and clever details. You have to love the design duo for their take on inventive double pant cuffs and fun pops of color when least expected.

Personally, I was so excited to see a recurring theme of oversized garments that I literally shrieked with joy – twice. The collection was precisely coordinated, mixing tailored coats with flowing undergarments that gave the impression of wearing a skirt without wearing a skirt.

The new collection has several highlights, including the electric blue wool backward coat, the dark Japanese denim jean jacket and the burgundy wool wide sleeve coat. The absolute standout piece is the white Hudson Bay double-breasted coat with the vertical black stripe.

Duckie Brown has received an increased amount of attention over the past several seasons. With the addition of the F/W ’13 collection, it’s safe to say that the menswear brand is more than ready for a long moment in the spotlight.

I’ve always thought of 2013 as “the future” and it looks like Joseph Abboud Creative Director, Bernardo Rojo feels the same way. Joseph Abboud F/W 2013 looks toward technology’s ever-changing future.

The modern menswear collection re-energizes the 1960’s futuristic curves found at TWA’s Flight Center as well as the metallic spacesuits of the Apollo Missions.
