Alphabet City has a new watering hole, full of signature cocktails, delicious Mexican fare, and artistic flair. Populares NYC has been open for less than 90 days and has already become a neighborhood favorite. We wandered by on a rainy Monday night and found the place jumping, filled with happy bar flies and diners enjoying the jovial atmosphere. The bar area is flooded with ambient lighting which compliments the beautiful imported tiles on the bar itself. The tiles came from Mexico adding to the authenticity, an intentional homage to the homeland of Populares’ cuisine. The windows are adorned with a railing of various cacti, adding a homey touch. Venture further into the space and you will enter their cozy and eclectic dining room that evokes both frivolity and romance. An accent wall is graced with colorful vintage ad clippings artfully arranged and the ceiling is a sea of black creatively covered in colorful hand-painted flowers. A string of soft amber light covers the back wall where a small kitchen space exists specifically for serving late-night tacos after the kitchen closes at 10 pm. Thankfully we arrived well ahead of closing time to sample the full menu.
The mixologists at Populares offer a unique menu of elevated classic cocktails as well as a few signature mixes. On the classic side, we thoroughly enjoyed their delicious margaritas. Their updated version of the vacation favorite features an assortment of mix-and-match flavors as well as a tajin salted rim. If you’re looking for something stronger we suggest their signature the Populares, a dangerous combination of whiskey and mezcal that will put hair on your chest. Don’t just have a drink complete the night with a small plate or two, definitely have a taco at least. We highly recommend the succulent duck taco. Savory with a hint of sweetness the tender duck was divine. If a small plate simply will not due, Populares also offers a dinner menu of delectable entrees including grilled lamb chops and our favorite Red Snapper. The fish is cooked perfectly and served with yellow rice, black beans, and topped with onions and peppers this was the best bite of the evening. Beware the fish is served whole and just enough for one hungry person or a duo to share.
As an emerging eatery Populares is still finding its groove. We have it on good authority some big changes are in store for the warmer months, including outdoor seating in the front, an exclusive back patio dining area, and theme nights for the grown and sexy. Drop by and enjoy their incredible hospitality and amazing cocktails. Pro tip: they don’t have a dessert menu but…on some nights if you ask nicely they may whip up the freshest churros and dipping sauces you’ve ever had.
