As usual I was running late. My dining companion texted me a picture of his refreshing Margarita to make me feel even worse as I was making my way to Brooklyn. When I finally arrived, I was greeted by our spunky waiter, an annoyed friend, and the delicious scent of Mexican food. All was right in the world.
Tiny’s Cantina is located on bustling Flatbush Ave with energetic vibes that match the energy and mood of the neighborhood. Their contemporary cuisine is rooted in Mexican flavors and traditions, inspired by Mexican street food and craft cocktails. They also lean in heavily on innovation and put a large emphasis on the freshest of ingredients, even making homemade tortillas.
Tiny Cantina is from the same the same group behind Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbecue and the Executive Chef Cenobio Canalizo is behind both menus. He pulls inspiration and flavors from Puebla, Mexico, his hometown, and his biggest inspiration is his family. He began his career as a dishwasher in New York and eventually proved that his place was elsewhere in the kitchen. His signature Mexican Pizza (Tlayuda) was named as a “Best NYC Dishes” by Eater New York in 2021, he’s participated in New York City Wine & Food Wine Festival and is often seen at other culinary events representing both restaurants.
We started with drinks and appetizers which included Wings Al Pastor (adobo marinade, pineapple salsa) and fresh Guacamole Clasico. Our drinks of choice were Tiny’s Margarita (Tequila or mezcal, Cointreau, lime, squirt, tajin) and Cactus Pear (Silver tequila, triple sec, pear puree, agave, lime) but we also taste-tested the Frozen Margarita. For our main dishes, we ordered a new menu item, the Chili Rubbed Snapper (Vera Cruz style sauce, capers, grape tomatoes) and Steak Tacos (Ribeye steak, guacamole, pico de gallo.) On the side, we ordered the incredible Street Corn (Mayonnaise, tajin, cotija cheese) which was maybe some of the best we’ve ever had. To close out the evening we indulged in Churros (Cinnamon, sugar, warm chocolate sauce), sharing them with the girls next to us who were out for a fun Friday night.
There are so many more menu items that stood out and are worth going back for like the Enchiladas, Shrimp Diablo, and Tiny’s Pozole. As the weather cools down, go get yourself some of this comforting Mexican cuisine.
