Overall: A cozy quick dining experience for sushi and ramen lovers. Take a break from traditional rolls and take full advantage of their specialty menu for a more unique meal. Their specialty rolls are a fresh take on familiar favorites.
Finding sushi in New York is a relatively easy task. Bite-sized bits of rolled rice and sea creatures can be purchased in all types of establishments including local supermarkets. Finding good sushi is the challenge. While many restaurants claim to honor the Japanese delicacy, with fresh authentic ingredients, few are able to deliver. Sushi Sushi is one of the few local eateries providing fresh fluke, eel, and other seafood to the hungry horde of New York’s sushi lovers. The small fast-casual restaurant is located in the West Village, beneath a simple painted sign. The dining area is just a few steps below street level. The space is small but functional with bar seating lining the walls, and a work station for the chefs in the rear. Upon arrival, we were handed a menu of their offerings. Bento boxes, ramen, and rice bowls are all available but with a name like theirs, we would be remiss if we didn’t try their signature rolls.
Edamame and Miso Soup
We started our meal with a comforting bowl of hot Miso soup and a bowl of edamame. The edamame is served steamed with a light dusting of sea salt.
Seafood Lover
This delicious roll is filled with Shrimp Tempura, and cucumber, topped with spicy crab and avocado, drizzled with spicy eel sauce. The varying textures and satisfying crunch made this an interesting bite.
Sushi Sushi
The namesake roll is made of Spicy crab and avocado topped with salmon, and fluke/striped bass, drizzled with mango miso sauce. The roll is tasty but the mango miso is exceptional. The flavor is a complex mixture of umami, sweet and savory.
Salmon Lover
We adore salmon and wasabi, so choosing this roll was a no brainer. The roll is made with Salmon and mango topped with spicy salmon, drizzled with honey wasabi mayo. The combination of smoky and spicy salmon was amazing but the best part of this was the incredible honey wasabi mayo. The sauce was rich creamy with a sweet heat kick.
In addition to their savory options, Sushi Sushi is also one of the few places where you can enjoy dessert sushi. Thankfully none of the dessert options include seafood. Guests can choose from an assortment of childhood favorites including a PB & J roll and two Nutella rolls.
