When a foodie thinks of New York City, images of crisp pizza slices and infamous deli favorites usually come to mind. However, as institutions go the steakhouse is native to New York and as popular as pepperoni or pastrami on rye. Our city is home to some of the country’s oldest steakhouses, some of which still operate in their original locations. Though historic steakhouses are a staple there are plenty of modern versions popping up all over the city. One of the newest is Benny John’s Bar and Grill, a relaxed upscale eatery on the east side of midtown. Just a quick walk from the chaos of Grand Central Terminal, on 48th street this semi-casual eatery serves up classic steakhouse fare in a modern setting brimming with old-school charm. The setting is a basic white tablecloth affair with a massive dining room and some quaint outdoor bistro-style seating. The atmosphere is casual without pretension, and the service is impeccable, hospitality at its finest.
Cocktails
Cucumber Martini
This was a much-needed refresher after suffering through a sweltering day in the city. This remastered classic is a refreshing mixture of gin lime juice and cucumber puree
Hot Passion
For a drink with a little kick, we recommend the Hot Passion. This spirited mix of coconut rum, passion fruit, and citrus features just a hint of jalapeno adding a bit of spice to its cool tropical flavors.
Food
Baked Clams
The clams were sensational. The buttery topping was a crisp tasty complement to the tender bite of clam
Sizzling Canadian Bacon
This was the biggest thickest slice of bacon we’ve ever had. It was juicy and smoky with just enough saltiness. Bacon lovers need to add this to their bucket list.
Pappardelle Bolognese
An immaculate plate of saucy pasta overflowing with tender bits of beef. The Bolognese was incredible, the ultimate plate of comfort food.
25oz Ribeye
You can’t go to a steakhouse and not sample the steak. This ribeye was fork tender and absolutely divine. The portion was more than enough for two and came with a trio of sauces: creamy bearnaise, peppery peppercorn, and house steak sauce.
Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach
Sides for your steak are ala carte and we chose a pair of classics. Creamy buttery mashed potatoes and creamed spinach.
Conclusion
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner but we may just drop by and take advantage of their all-day happy hour. This daily special features small plates, beers, and house sangria. Some of the happy hour offerings include sliders, quesadillas, and chicken skewers. Our dinner at Benny Johns was a delightful experience thanks in part to the attentive staff. They never hovered but also were never too far away. You can get a steak anywhere but the service is what makes it worthwhile. We’ve been to plenty of steakhouses over the years and despite being one of the newer kids on the block Benny John’s is a fast favorite. The steak came out sizzling, succulent, and perfectly medium. It was melt-in-your-mouth good. The bacon starter was incredible and sized to share but once you take that first bite you may not even want to share. The best bite of the evening is hard to determine but we will be back this fall for another bowl of their amazing bolognese.
