Is there any better way to launch a cool new product than with endless edibles, bottomless cocktail glasses and a crowd-pleasing performance? T-Mobile didn’t think so either, as they celebrated the launch of their newest device the Vibrant. Held at a grand loft space at 463 West Street and featuring a special performance by Duke Graduate and turntable maestro Mike Posner it was a fab event indeed. The soiree was catered by Creative Edge, who kept the food and booze flowing for the duration of the event. We enjoyed gourmet Jell-O shots as well as liquor filled popsicles and snow cones, the perfect compliments to the humid NY air. The bevy of beverages was accompanied by an impressive slider station as well as mobile waiters with endless trays of delectables. Twenty minutes into the party we were stuffed, but not too stuffed to get the skinny on T-Mobile’s newest cell phone the Vibrant.
Huge HD monitors on one landing allowed spectators to try out apps and features of the new phone The Samsung Vibrant, is T-Mobile’s answer to iPhone envy. It has a touchscreen interface and its own unique series of apps. This new edition to the t-mobile lineup, available July 15th, 2010, comes out the box fully equipped with:
Slacker Radio – A Free personalized radio application that allows the user to configure their own station based on personal preferences. One of the coolest features is the ability to block certain artists or songs, I can name at least 5 artists I’d like to block from existence but we won’t go there!
Gogo® In-flight Internet – Up to one month of free in-flight WiFi Access on the device. Service isn’t available with every airline just yet, but give it time.
Amazon Kindle – Turn this phone into a mini Kindle with access to thousands of books, and the first chapter is free!
MobiTV – You may never have to miss another soap opera, talk show or whatever else there is to watch on daytime TV. This app lets you watch live shows as well as some On-Demand titles.
20th Century Fox’s “James Cameron’s Avatar – The full movie comes pre-loaded on the Vibrant for easy access to the world of Pandora. All these apps and plenty more which will soon be available at the Samsung Media Hub, make the Vibrant a pocket sized entertainment center.
Not to worry, workaholics will also be relieved to know the device can handle all those emails and business contacts. The Vibrant supports personal and corporate e-mail, including MS Exchange, Gmail and POP3 and IMAP e-mail services. It also as Swype® text input, which makes sending full emails a breeze. All these apps and features and they still had time to add a 5mp camera. This camera not only takes photos but also full video, HD video to be precise (720p, in case you were wondering, or even know what that means) and can play it all back on your HD TV. There is no flash for the device but there is photo editing software as well as varying camera settings to enhance your picture taking capabilities. With all this going on it’s a godsend that t-mobile thought ahead and made it so this unit can support over 30GB of external memory and has one of the largest batteries of comparable devices. The battery life, according to T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant product manager Daniel Herb, is pretty standard. Though it will vary with your individual usage Herb, assured us that the battery more or less lasts the entire day (provided it actually starts the day fully charged). Feel free to check out our video coverage for screenshots and additional info.

Once the work was done it was time to party. The night came to a close with a live performance by one of music’s biggest rising stars. Mike Posner wowed the crowd with a medley of tracks including his current smash hit “Cooler than Me” which at the time of the party was at #6 on the billboard chart. An impressive feat for a new comer to the mainstream, but not to the industry, Posner has 2 mix tapes under his belt. His smooth electro-pop sound brought the night to a rousing end. If you missed the show in Buffalo on July 14th, don’t fret he’ll be in Nearby PA on the 16th and 17th. Better yet just check his site for complete tour info, www.mikeposner.com and DOWNLOAD his mixtapes for FREE HERE

All in all it was a great night. It’s always a great night when you get to enjoy interesting new cocktails, discover new music and be a part of a new and promising venture. The Vibrant is a cool phone with great features. Its memory capabilities alone make it a viable competitor in an ever growing market place. The Vibrant is available now for $199.99 with a 2 year agreement, but factoring in T-Mobiles reputation for reasonable pricing on service means this phone will likely pay for itself in time. I am seriously questioning my loyalty to AT&T and their outlandish bills. With the Vibrant I would have all the functionality and cool of an iPhone without the hefty monthly bill…hmmmmm.

This new phone will definitely be one of the stronger contenders in the battle of the smart phones. I may check this one out myself….
