La Barrita Brings Argentina to Brooklyn (Review)

by xoJohn

Location: 132 Montague Street, Brooklyn

Cuisine: Argentinean

Best Dish: Though we would happily eat our way through a swimming pool of their decadent wild mushroom sauce, the star of the evening was the bone in short rib, a carnivore’s dream come true.

Overall: A quaint casual eatery with warmth and charm to spare. Add it to your date night roster or weekly happy hour rotation.

The festival included food, drink, music, the latter of which was curated by the one and only musician and culinary tastemaker Questlove. Questlove brought the beats with a live DJ set to kick-off the festival’s first major event, Sweet Thinking: A Dessert Party, which he co-hosted alongside celebrity chef Dominque Ansel on the McCarren Hotel & Pool rooftop.

Afropunk Takes Brooklyn

by Sia-Alika Battle

AFROPUNK started with a documentary in 2003 that galvanized a generation of disenfranchised multicultural Punk music enthusiasts and Hardcore Kids that didn’t see themselves represented in any meaningful way in the dialogue of pop culture or the underground music scene. The first AFROPUNK FEST was in 2005 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In the decade since the first festival, AFROPUNK has expanded to include an activist and artistic collective with events from Bonnaroo to Paris. This year’s festival was held in Fort Greene on a perfect weekend at Commodore Barry Park.

The musical lineup was meticulously curated by festival founders Matthew Morgan and James Spooner. Performers included Lauryn Hill, Kelis, Danny Brown, Lenny Kravitz, DJ Beverly Bond, and the incomparable Grace Jones.

Over the weekend we ventured out to Brooklyn as American Express celebrated the launch of their new Amex EveryDay Credit Card and, as a founding partner and dedicated sponsor, the conclusion of another great year of 2014 Tribeca Film Festival by hosting a day of fun for families at Brooklyn Bowl.

Throughout the evening, families enjoyed buffet style food, giveaways, bowling, and even got the chance to check out Tribeca Film’s animated movie, “Moon Man”. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. We even spotted Designer Rebecca Minkoff with husband Gavin Bellour and son Luca Shai getting in on the action.
