This week we stopped by one of New York’s most talked about dining experiences, Sushi Roxx. After getting a glimpse of the restaurant on The Real Housewives of New York City, we couldn’t wait. The trendy Japanese inspired dinner theater and club hybrid just celebrated their one year anniversary and is already planning lots of surprises for years to come. Their latest major announcement is a partnership with Karina Smirnoff, you may know her from being an award-winning dancer and perfecting her moves on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Smirnoff has signed on board to choreograph the fourth performance installment called “ROXX:RELOADED” at Sushi Roxx. She brings 20 years of experience to make it the biggest and best show to-date. During multiple dinner seating’s, guests will be invited to a nightly spectacle where the wait-staff seamlessly slip from servers into the spotlight and “Flash Mob” to select songs.
We didn’t know what to expect from the show, but it definitely had us grooving in our seats. The singing was spot on and the dancing was exhilarating. Our waiters didn’t miss a beat. They kept our bellies stuffed with delicious sushi and glasses full with their cocktails. The “Double Dragon” cocktails include Bombay sapphire, green tea, lemongrass, fuji apple, amaro nonino lemon & apple bitters. Try this cocktail if you’re looking for savory flavors. The gin gives it a nice kick. Their newest cocktail is the “Kryptonite,” is has Avion silver, st. Germain elderflower liqueur, lemon agave, kiki & cilantro. It looks like something straight out of Krypton. The cocktail is delicious.
While enjoying our cocktails, we listened to the sounds of DJ Mokalicious on the 1’s and 2’s and the fabulous wait-staff belt out hits from everyone like Alicia Keys to Beyonce. They even do it while rocking designer clothes from Betsey Johnson. To top it off, in the dining room, you’re surrounded by a slew of TV screens that literally take you to Asian with stunning images all around you. Jason Apfelbaum, CEO of ROXX Hospitality Corp., turned to veteran designer DeVinn Bruce to create the exotic, visually enticing and entertaining adventure.
How can we go to a restaurant without talking about the food? Executive Chef Edwin Purnomo is the man behind the sushi. We enjoyed the “Appolo Creed (spicy scallop, avocado, shiso leaf, tobiko & drizzled eel sauce), as well as the Mr. Pink (shrimp tempura, cream cheese, apple, mango, spicy kani & fresh orange). Other highlights from the raw menu include Original ROXX Box like the Salmon Tomato (salmon sashimi, sautéed tomato, onion remoulade, sushi rice), and signature roll offerings like the White Dragon (eel, pickled squash, avocado, cucumber, yuzu, crunch), Spice Girl (spicy salmon, pickled jalapeño, crunch, basil, aioli) and the Mr. Miyagi (avocado, cucumber, Japanese pickle, sprouts, burdock, sriracha). Gary Wallach, formerly of Morgans Hotel Group & Apartment 13, is the Bar Director of Sushi Roxx and has created a diverse, flavorful and eye-popping program that blends classic cocktails with innovative ideas all while incorporating Asian flavors and fresh ingredients such as the Kung Fu Hustle (Absolut Vodka, cucumber, thyme, lime. sparkling water) and Kobayashi Maru (Woodford Reserve Rye, Sage, Blueberry, St. Germain, Lemon, Xocolatl Mole Bitters).
Sushi Roxx is an overtop but amazingly fun experience. We would highly recommend it for special occasions, a night on the town with friends, or family outings. Sushi Roxx is located within The Tuscany, a St. Giles Boutique Hotel in Midtown East (120 East 39th Street, NYC 10016/212.726.9500)

[…] After visiting Sushi Roxx last year, we were well aware that this particular dinner theater specialized in serving sushi with a side of sass; but what we didn’t realize was this time around we would become champions for our love-sick servers. The show starts with a club version of the 90’s Haddaway hit “What is Love” and only intensifies from there. Throughout the evening, we were treated to several love-related medleys by pop icons like Madonna, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, and Rihanna. But it wasn’t until our very own waitress, Nysali, belted out a barefoot version of “Every Little Bit Hurts” that we went from being patrons to in-the-moment BFFs lending our emotional and vocal support. Another amazing talent you should be on the lookout for is, Katie Lee. Her voice is incredible! […]
