Review: Alice’s Arbor in Brooklyn

by xoJohn

Location: 594 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

Cuisine: American

Best Dish: We adored the pork chops. The meat was succulent and the chutney was a tasty complement to the meaty chops.

Price: $$

Overall: A casual home-style eatery the whole family will enjoy.

Brooklyn welcomes Farm to Table Freshness with new eatery Alice’s Arbor. This Bed-Stuy gem offers classic seasonal American fare. The purveyors of this establishment are committed to providing a healthy alternative to preservative laden dining. To achieve this they have curated a seasonal menu showcasing the freshest vegetables and meats of the season. Each dish is prepared using only ingredients sourced from local farms. The Farm to Table concept is evident in the design of their space. The decor is reminiscent of a charming country bistro with reclaimed wood and vintage barn materials throughout. The space includes driftwood branch light fixtures, hanging mobiles scrounged from the Ashokan Reservoir in Upstate New York, and clustered glass beaker pendant light fixtures. It reminds us of family road trips down the east coast, sharing a meal with loved ones in a classic country kitchen.

May is National Burger Month. We kicked off this year’s festivities with a trip to Harlem Shake. Since opening in May of 2013, Harlem Shake has earned a fan base that started with its neighbors and has since branched out to the outer boroughs and beyond. Burger lovers from all over flock to the retro eatery, to enjoy the sumptuous menu of burgers, shakes, and sandwiches. The vibe at “Shake” mirrors the coolness of its surroundings. Harlem is known for its artistry and affluence, and Harlem Shake embodies the spirit of Harlem with its stylish decor and welcoming energy.

Award winning recording artist, Common joined director/screenwriter Nelson George on stage Sunday night, for a Tribeca Talk: Storytellers conversation, in partnership with Citi, as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T. Attendees got a first look at a never-before-seen extended version of Letter to the Free from director Bradford Young debuted prior to the conversation. The conversation spanned musical influences of the 80s and 90s, social justice flashpoints, Common’s first acting gig on Tracee Ellis Ross & Mara Brock Akil’s Girlfriends, his respect for director Ava DuVernay, and activism in hip-hop today, name-dropping Chance the Rapper and Kendrick Lamar.

Chefs Club Counter Opens in SoHo

by xoJohn

Last night, Chefs Club Counter opened its doors on the iconic corner of Spring and Lafayette with a special VIP preview of the first “fine-fast” concept brought to life by entrepreneur Stephane De Baets, the Belgian entrepreneur behind the game-changing restaurant group, Chefs Club. Hundreds of hungry foodies packed the posh eatery for a first look and taste. The VIP crowd sipped on fine wines, like Ben Watts’ Watts Up Rosé, while sampling the menu. Speaking of the menu, everything was quite tasty but our favorites were the JG Burger Sliders, Duck Rice, Chicory Pizzas, and the Eggslut Crostini. They are definitely a must-have when you stop by. So who are the rockstar chefs making up this delicious menu? Jean-Georges Vongerichten, George Mendes, Linton Hopkins, Magnus Hansson, and Eggslut’s Alvin Cailan.

Introducing Crown Royal Vanilla

by xoJohn

Crown Royal Vanilla Flavored Whisky is a blend of hand selected Crown Royal whiskeys infused with the rich flavor of Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. The result is a unique whiskey bursting with the flavor of vanilla and the distinctive smoothness of Crown Royal. Crown Royal Vanilla can be enjoyed on the rocks, as a chilled shot, mixed with soda, and as a delicious Vanilla Old Fashioned.

by xoJohn

Cuisine: Healthy

Best Dish: The backyard burger is a surprisingly filling and tasty option, but the Mahi Curry stood out as the favorite. The curry was decadent but somehow the veggies remained crisp and fresh tasting.

Overall: A healthy homestyle eatery perfect for a post workout meal, or a healthy alternative for your next casual night out.
