May is National Burger Month. We kicked off this year’s festivities with a trip to Harlem Shake. Since opening in May of 2013, Harlem Shake has earned a fan base that started with its neighbors and has since branched out to the outer boroughs and beyond. Burger lovers from all over flock to the retro eatery, to enjoy the sumptuous menu of burgers, shakes, and sandwiches. The vibe at “Shake” mirrors the coolness of its surroundings. Harlem is known for its artistry and affluence, and Harlem Shake embodies the spirit of Harlem with its stylish decor and welcoming energy.
We love a good burger, so we had to drop by and see if their buzz was well earned. After a few minutes with the menu was settled on a duo of savory and spicy burgers, The “Hot Mess” and the “Harlem Jerk.” The Hot Mess lives up to its moniker as a juicy messy burger. The Pat LaFrieda patty is topped with pickles, American cheese, Harlem Shake’s special sauce, smoky chipotle mayo, pickled cherry pepper and bacon relish. The flavor profile is complex with notes of sweet salty and sour mixed with a combination of textures including crunchy and creamy. The “Harlem Jerk” is influenced by Caribbean flavors and is topped with Jerk seasoned fries and jerk mayo. If you enjoy the cinnamon and peppery notes of jerk seasoning you will enjoy this burger. It wasn’t as spicy as we had hoped but we enjoyed it just the same.
In addition to its basic burgers, Harlem Shake also offers an assortment of chicken options. We highly recommend the Hot Honey Chick. This chicken sandwich is made of fried chicken drizzled with Mike’s Hot Honey then topped with jalapeno pickles and honey mayo. This will easily become one of your favorite guilty pleasures. If that isn’t decadent enough give the “Fatty Melt” a try. With the melt, you can indulge two cravings in one. It’s not one but two burger patties topped with cheese served between two grilled cheese sandwiches. It isn’t as heavy as you would think but it is filling and delicious.
We started this year’s burger month on a high note. Harlem Shake lived up to its growing reputation delivering tasty burgers in a fun casual atmosphere.
