Taste Talks Brooklyn, Take 3

by Darrel Alejandro

Over 5,000 people showed up to the Third Annual Taste Talks in Brooklyn this past weekend. The event, co-presented by Squarespace, was a total hit featuring dozens of chef presenting new platters and points of view on various panels and in various cooking demos.

The festival included food, drink, music, the latter of which was curated by the one and only musician and culinary tastemaker Questlove. Questlove brought the beats with a live DJ set to kick-off the festival’s first major event, Sweet Thinking: A Dessert Party, which he co-hosted alongside celebrity chef Dominque Ansel on the McCarren Hotel & Pool rooftop.

Pairings: Famous Grouse Whisky x Lobster Rolls

by xoJohn

Happy Friday! TO kick off this amazing holiday weekend, we’re sharing a fabulous food pairing. We are huge fans of whiskey and seafood! Luckily The Famous Grouse is mixing together Grouse & Ginger drams to pair perfectly with everyone’s favorite summer snack, The Lobster Roll. Nicola Riske, Brand Ambassador at The Famous Grouse dished on this dynamic pairing, “Whisky pairs beautifully with a lobster roll as the creamy mayo and melted butter combination with coat your mouth and then soften the alcohol on your palate. Specifically, The Famous Grouse pairs perfectly due to the zesty orange and citrus notes, which compliments the freshness of the lobster, celery and lemon already in the recipe,”

Location: 50 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009

Cuisine: American

Best Dish: Two Words- Lobster Tacos. These are an amazing hybrid between a lobster roll and a fish taco. The crunchy shell holds up well with the large chunks of delicious lobster meat.

Overall: It’s more than a bar it’s an event. Despite its horror themed appearance Lovecraft is a fun relaxed place with a friendly staff and really good food. It’s a good place to enjoy after work or with a few friends. The space also makes a great venue for a first date the decor alone will give you something to talk about and if you’re lucky, Troy will be there to supply the soundtrack to your new love story.

New York City’s West Village is hiding a gem. It’s called Chomp Chomp! This hidden gem is where Chef Simpson Wong is serving up flavorful Singaporean Food. Wong is giving New Yorkers an authentic taste of Singaporean hawker food. What is hawker food? It’s similar to street food, though in Singapore, street food vendors have been housed in open-air food courts called hawker centers for decades now. His menu is a litany of Singaporean specialties, many of which are incredibly hard to find in the United States.

We stopped by Chomp Chomp a few days ago where Chef Simpson Wong prepared a few popular Singaporean dishes. My favorites were the following:

This post is sponsored by Hornitos® Tequila

Independence Day is a federal holiday in which we commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The 4th of July is also a holiday to bring us all together for a joyous celebration. I have fond childhood memories of fireworks shopping with my friends in Washington, DC and then gathering for a fun BBQ, where our parents would light all of the fireworks. As I grew into adulthood, this day became a tradition for a few of us to get together and watch the city’s fireworks, while enjoying some good old BBQ. Fireworks, BBQ, family, and friends, and of course booze. If you’re planning the same type of BBQ, you might want to take it to the next level with a fun booze-infused treat. I played around with a few ideas. Most of my inner circle loves tequila and BBQ, so I thought it would be a great idea to hook them up with a Hornitos® Tequila Plata infused BBQ striped chicken dish. It’s pretty simple to make and only took 15 minutes to cook.

Location: 255 5th Avenue

Cuisine: American/Italian Steakhouse

Best Dish: We highly recommend the porterhouse for two. It was filling and tender, the way a good steak should be. For a lighter meal try the seafood pasta. The sauce is decadent and the seafood is well done.

Overall: An easy going yet sophisticated eatery with great service and a delicious menu. As far as steakhouses go, it is one of the very best in the city. The owners pride themselves on their amazing hospitality and a well-executed menu.

International Speciality Food: Farinata

by Mark Sage

This tasty crepe made from simple ingredients has little found its way from its origins in North West Italy. It is highly popular in Liguria Italy, and but its broad popularity hasn’t extended much outside Liguria, which is surprising given how well other things Italian have traveled around the world.

But, its delicious, and the ingredients very simple:

  • chickpea flour
  • water
  • olive oil
  • salt
  • topping

So Delicious: Le Meridien’s Éclair Sweet Soiree

by xoJohn

As we mentioned before, Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts and Johnny Iuzzini have teamed up for the first-ever global éclair program. As part of the brand’s new culinary program, Le Méridien hotels and resorts worldwide will offer guests the opportunity to indulge in a variety of modern twists on the chic Parisian treat, including both classic flavors as well as unique creations inspired by the destination. In addition, Chef Iuzzini will create eight seasonal éclair recipes for the hotels, inspired by his travels through various Le Méridien destinations. As part of the program, each hotel will offer modern takes on three signature éclair flavors – coffee, chocolate and vanilla – as well as one locally inspired flavor. Chef Iuzzini’s recent trip to San Francisco was documented in the above video and gives us some insight into his inspiration for the San Francisco-themed éclair! Which is one of our favorites.
