Over the holiday season, XOJOHN had the pleasure of being introduced to the works of the gifted painter Mark DeMaio. Mr. DeMaio is currently showing an exciting, eye-catching collection that combines recognizably famous cartoon characters with religious iconography to deliver a pop art tableau that will shock and amaze the viewer. The images mix childhood memories with the Biblical stories, the iconic Nativity Scene is re-cast with Olive Oyl as the Virgin Mary is a particularly affecting tableau. This controversial subject, in conjunction with the artist’s signature use of bold, vibrant colors, texture and unpredictable techniques reflect the insight and daring statements that Mr. DeMaio has to share with his audiences.

Tucked away in a second floor Soho loft, guests were pleasantly surprised when they entered a sleek salon appropriately decorated with images from Sophie’s portfolio. Sophie chose some of her favorite photos from past fashion shoots such as Alice + Olivia, Gilded Age, Clandestine Industries, and ALIOMI, an emerging fashion line for which she is the in-house photographer.
Swatch has expanded its popular Swatch & Art Collection with new watches by contemporary artists and designers working in a broad range styles. The new Swatch Art Specials enhance and continue the celebrated relationship between Swatch and Art. Launched at the Art Special at the Pompidou Centre, the collection sparked a delightful series of joint productions with innovative and artists. 25 years later, world renowned artists such as film director Pedro Almodovar, French street painter and rapper Grems, New York City’s “urban primitivist” Billy The Artist” painter, Manish Arora and more have collaborated to create artistic wristwear for this exclusive collection.

Last night, A.R.T. celebrated the launch of their inaugural portfolio, “ModulA.R.T. by A.R.T.” In March 2010, the brand launched its international e-store, as well as a special Pop-Up Store located in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, where the opening reception was held.
