We had the privilege to celebrate the 30th anniversary of G-Shock. The star-studded affair began with a trip down memory lane followed by video introductions to some of the latest innovations by the brand. For their big 3-0, G-Shock will launch several new designs including a limited edition revamp of three of the most popular styles. The original 5000, solar-powered GWM5600 and best-selling 6900 all receive an update to their iconic style but maintain their classic ruggedness and dependability. The 30th-anniversary styles will be available in classic “Thunder Yellow”
The brand also gave guests a sneak peek at the MTG (Metal Twisted G-Shock) The sleek metal design offers G-Shock fans a luxury timepiece with the same durability and function they expect from their favorite brand. We also witnessed the birth of two celebrity designed styles, the Louie Vito and the Eminem. The Vito is designed by Pro skateboarder Louie Vito. The winter inspired piece features shock and water resistance and is equipped with Low-Temperature Resistance down to -20C/-4F. The design also allows wearers to activate the backlight with a mere flick of the wrist.
The Eminem watch is a bold black design with red highlights that include the skyline of the hip-hop legend’s home town Detroit, MI. After the review of the latest styles guests enjoyed premium cocktails and passing appetizers at the massive Basketball City space. Both the inside and outside spaces were flooded with excited party goers waiting eagerly for the evening’s performance. Some of the party guests included Actor Chris Meloni, Singer Melanie Fiona and talk show host Adrienne Bailon. The opening act for the evening’s festivities was Alabama native YelaWolf, the latest to sign with Eminem’s Shady Records. The hip hop newcomer wowed the audience with an energetic set. Some of the rappers biggest hits include “Gangsta of Love” and “Hard White (Up in the Club) fans may remember the young man from a brief stint on the short-lived Missy Elliot reality show “The Road to Stardom” back in 2005.
Though YelaWolf put on a spectacular show he was simply warming up the crowd for Hip-Hop Icon Eminem! His hoody clad frame entered approached the stage to deafening applause and an endless sea of camera phone photographers. The crowd moved with his song to song singing along and hanging on to each syllable. The playlist included a few tracks from his latest LP “The Recovery” (2010) as well as some of his classic gems from “The Slim Shady LP” and “Encore”.
The performance choice mirrored the theme of the evening. Yela Wolf offered us a glimpse of the future much like the MTG and Eminem reminded us why classics are so revered, greatness never goes out of style. Happy 30th Anniversary G-Shock!
