Overall: A fine dining experience unlike any other. It is at once refined yet casual it is the space to have a great meal and happily enjoy the company of your fellow diners without pretense or judgment. The restaurant is sophisticated enough to serve caviar but not above offering a diner a well sung happy birthday.
Having heard so many great things about Delmonico’s Kitchen in the Hamptons, I was more than delighted to be invited to the midtown location for dinner. On a humid Monday my company braved the sea of faces in midtown to visit the 36th street location. The beautiful white light of the familiar Delmonico’s logo was a beacon of hope in the rush hour traffic of human bodies.
We ventured inward and were instantly impressed with the warm inviting décor. The hostess area and bar make a small entryway into the expansive dining space. We were escorted to a premium spot at the window and listened attentively as our server informed us of the evening’s specials. Still undecided what to eat we ordered a round of cocktails to start. I had the “Thymeline 1847” a cool refreshing beverage made of house infused thyme syrup, vodka, home-made lemonade. My companion chose the seasonal Daiquiri which fro the summer was prepared with blood-orange, lime, sugar and rum.
After the beverages we set our sights on appetizers. To start our feast we went with the “Lobster Newburg 1837”, “Crab cake Eggs Benedict” and 6 East Coast Oysters from the raw bar. Lobster Newburg is one of the most famous dishes offered at the original Delmonico’s over one hundred years ago. The dish has a well served reputation of decadence and incredible flavor. The lobster was warm and tender floating in a savory creamy sauce. The original version is served with an egg, Delmonico’s plays homage to the original with a general helping of caviar and caviar crème.
Brunch lovers are widely familiar with the concept of an Eggs Benedict. Delmonico’s takes the idea a step further by using a poached quail egg atop a juicy crab cake. Instead of ham the dish is served with a slice of delicious grilled belly and d’espalette hollandaise sauce for a peppery kick.
My companion continued his seafood feast with 6 East Coast Oysters from the raw bar. The oysters arrived with the familiar accompaniments atop some crushed ice.
Right before our entrees arrived we were treated to a bowl of mushroom risotto. Acquerello Risotto is a creamy dish of risotto flavored by Lemon, Sweet Pea, Wild Mushroom, and Parmesan. The creamy risotto was outstanding, the pop of fresh sweet peas worked very well with the bright lemony flavor.
While working on the risotto my companion ordered another cocktail. He had the Delmonico’s Classic a beautiful light beverage of house infused dill syrup, cherry cordial, lamberti prosecco.
The drink was set aside once our entrees arrived. When it came to main courses we simply could not decide on anything so we went with our top three favorites. We ordered the Pan Roasted Chicken, Colossal Shrimp and the Delmonico’s Steak. The Chicken is served with a poached hen egg, giant prawn, brioche croutons, and wild mushrooms. This is one superb chicken dish. The bird is cooked carefully and the meat was succulent.
The colossal shrimp did not disappoint these were the biggest shrimp I have ever seen. The shrimp were plump juicy and cooked beautifully.
Delmonico’s is known for its delicious steaks so we could not leave without having one. We ordered it medium and it arrived flavorful tender and with just the right amount of pink on the inside. This is not a dish for the faint of heart it is a hearty generous portion of beef for one, it is well worth the money and big enough to be shared. The steak came with a serving of crispy fried onions.
Though each of entrees came with a serving of a vegetable or two we ordered two additional sides. We had the roasted asparagus with lemon vinaigrette and the deliciously cheesy hash browns.
Despite our full belly we could not leave without dessert. Delmonico’s actually makes its own ice cream! This is an absolute must have. We sampled a bit of the oreo ice cream and it was simply divine, but we were floored by the inventive baked Alaska ice cream cones. Small cones were filled with homemade cinnamon ice cream then topped with a beautiful meringue that was then torched and placed atop jelly filled sponge cakes. This is an amazingly rich dessert.
Foodies all over the city have likely heard many things about Delmonico’s and the rumors of amazing service and fantastic food are all true. Dining at Delmonico’s is well worth the expense and a wonderful treat for loved ones or yourself. Head to Delmonico’s and prepare to indulge in sumptuous cuisine in a warm inviting atmosphere. […] Jeffery Miller, General Manager of Andaz Wall Street, gave a little insight into this new venture; “…since Lower Manhattan has so much to offer, it was easy to prepare an indulgent experience that not only includes an over-the-top stay in one of our stylish suites, but also many Wall Street-area classics, such as Delmonico’s.” […]
