Director:
Writers: Sasha Gervasi, David N. White, Stephen Hamel
Cast: Keanu Reeves, James Caan, Vera FarmigaHenry (Reeves) lived a basically uneventful life. Spending nights as a toll booth collector and married to a nurse with a day shift, Henry’s existence is one of routine and quiet despair. His lackluster existence takes an unexpected turn when he is duped into being the getaway driver of a bank robbery and sent to prison. It is in prison that he meets the charming Max (Caan) a con-man with the unique perspective of actually enjoying his stay in prison. Max and Henry devise a plan to rob the very bank Henry was sentenced and wrongfully convicted of robbing setting in motion a mad caper filled with surprise revelations, a stint as an actor and a new love interest. Henry’s life finally finds its purpose but at what cost?
Mild mannered and utterly passionless Henry ekes through life with the enthusiasm of a crushed potato chip. When the opportunity to escape his humdrum existence comes along Henry leaps to it even if it costs him his freedom, and it does. One of the most poignant lines in the film is delivered by Caan who quips in one of his first conversations with Henry ” The biggest crime is not committing to your dreams” a statement that sums up Henry’s biggest dilemma on a few brief words and opens up the audience to the movie’s overall theme. Henry’s life is so passionless that he expresses no emotion at all at losing his wife or his job as they were major players in his self imposed prison sentence. Freeing himself from them finally opens up his mind to greater possibilities that ultimately open doors to his finding a life path and a partner to share it with. A funny quirky film this is one worth seeing. A good comedy devoid of fart jokes, toilet humor and gratuitous stupidity this film has a great story and an amazing lovable cast of players.
