A Night at Populares NYC

by xoJohn

Alphabet City has a new watering hole, full of signature cocktails, delicious Mexican fare, and artistic flair. Populares NYC has been open for less than 90 days and has already become a neighborhood favorite. We wandered by on a rainy Monday night and found the place jumping, filled with happy bar flies and diners enjoying the jovial atmosphere. The bar area is flooded with ambient lighting which compliments the beautiful imported tiles on the bar itself.  The tiles came from Mexico adding to the authenticity, an intentional homage to the homeland of Populares’ cuisine. The windows are adorned with a railing of various cacti, adding a homey touch.

Best Dish: Robalo Rayados (Striped Bass) Enchilada is not your typical enchilada. Union Cantina serves it up as a deconstructed style with a few layers of the soft enchilada mixed with a crispy tostada style shell and flavors including queso blanco cheese, cucumber, avocado and their house enchilada sauce, which make this decadent dish worth biting into and saving all your room.

Best Dish: The Queso Fundido was as amazing as any cheese lover could imagine. Thick gooey cheese and spicy chorizo in a sizzling platter how could you go wrong? If you prefer sweets to cheese, the churro bowl is the right choice. The warm churro and cold ice cream are a delicious combination.

Overall: A chic sexy space with sumptuous Mexican fare and an impressive assortment of Mezcal and Tequilas. The right space for date night or mingling with other sexy singles.

Amigos Restaurant & Bar (Review)

by Desha Winborne

Location: 2888 Broadway, btw 112th and 113th  New York, NY 10025

Cuisine: Mexican

Best Dish: Surprisingly the best dish was the Que Pasta. The rich sauce and spice was an unexpected treat.

Overall: Casual easy atmosphere and great food. This is a good choice for a low key dinner with friends or a casual night out.

We ventured out to Morningside Heights in search of something tasty and found it at Amigos, a quaint Mexican restaurant and bar. The decor is vibrant with red and white checkered tablecloths and colorful artwork displayed on the walls. The venue is surprisingly large with seating outside, near the bar, and at the rear. Bar seating is cozy and inviting; great for mingling with other patrons. For a more intimate meal, seating at the rear provides a larger area with the distance between parties and communal tables for larger groups. The menu is playful and fun with a mixture of traditional Mexican dishes and barbecue favorites.
