Not all Amarone wines are the same.
I enjoyed the 2013 Tomassi De Buris Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reserva at the 2026 Tre Bicchieri at the Metropolitan Pavilion. This was recommended by Matthew Green, Assistant Vice President of Sales at Vintus NY. The 2013 vintage was highly regarded and one of the best in recent years.
This wine was balanced, elegant, and structured due to the extra aging of at least 5 years in oak. It was not heavy despite at 15.5% ABV.
There are aromas of cherries, strawberries, spices, tobacco, and cocoa.
This premium, limited production wine by the Tomassi family comes from a selected 1.9-hectare” La Groletta”vineyard in Sant’Ambrogio. It is their top-range exclusive project.
Giancarlo Tommasi is their modern master oenologist.
It is a blend of 69% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 12% Rondinella, and 8% Oseleta.
The grapes are hand-harvested, and the hand-selected bunches are dried on bamboo shoots for 110 days.
The grapes are de-stemmed and soft-pressed in January for 10 days.
Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 8-22°C for 30 days.
