Jonesing
Being just an occasional wine drinker, I found the choices staggering though their guide was helpful with the listing arranged from lightest to richest. Anyways, Reidel glass in hand, I decided to go about my evening of tamed imbibing a little differently trolling past bottles and bottles of chardonnays, gewürztraminers, and sauvignon blancs only to find myself with purveyors entertaining the fewest guests to, perhaps, discover some hidden gems (and with the countless wines available that I already knew would be great, I figured why wait for a pour!). I sampled Nobilo of New Zealand’s “Icon” Marlborough sauvignon blanc and found it to be a perfectly light white with fruity notes that just epitomized summer, if it were bottled. Another notable, on the richer side of the spectrum, was Sandeman’s Founders Reserve Porto (named in honor of the founder) aged 5 years. It’s a full and complex port rich in red fruits and berries that’s great to pair with cheeses or rich chocolate desserts.
Some of New York’s best were well-represented including Hung Ry, ABC Kitchen, Spasso, and Ai Fiori. While the obvious stars were the wines, there were several other welcomed and tasty appearances- freshly shucked oysters from Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant, mini Roman-style pizzas from Grandaisy Bakery, various breads and cheeses from Artisanal Bistro, and chocolates from La Maison Du Chocolate.
