Designers usually find inspiration for fashion symbolized by a certain lifestyle or aim for their clientele to embody. It’s not a usual concept that you see fashion inspired by hotels though – which is the exact concept behind W Hotel’s Global Glam fashion collection.
The Global Glam presentation, which seemed more like a party for attendees rather than a show, was the second time that the W brand showed the line during New York Fashion Week. The collection is a fashionable interpretation curated by W Hotels Global Fashion Director Amanda Ross. The looks, which were created by fifteen different designers chosen by Ross, were original pieces reflecting the design aesthetic of three upcoming or newly opened W Hotels – W Taipei (opened on February 14th), W Austin (opened in December) and W Mexico City (undergoing renovation).
The collection featured designs by Eugenia Kim, Twinkle by Wenlan, Mara Hoffman, and Clare Vivier. Their designs were abstract interpretations of each hotels’ design personality – for example, W Taipei nature-electrified design concept was reflected by bold, standout pieces like a fuchsia kimono-style silk dress and a zip-front eggplant lace dress.
W Austin had more of a bohemian feel, inspired by the city’s unofficial motto, “Keep Austin Weird.” Vintage-styled pieces like multi-colored maxi dresses with muted shades of burgundy, rose and blue paired with a Eugina Kim floppy har and turquoise leather cuffs were reflective of Austin’s free spirit and diverse culture. W Mexico City featured the colorful costumes and ornate masks traditional of the Dia De Los Muertos festival (Day of the Dead) with a black wool cape and a slinky purple bustier dress by Mara Hoffman mixing mystery with surprise.
Bright LED lighting, illuminated rods and moving sound bars gave the final touch to each of the three respective ready-to-wear themes, enforcing the interpretations and inspirations for the designs.
French DJ group YELLE performed a vibrant live set that sent attendees dancing in the Box venue, and world-renowned mixologist Charlotte Voisey created signature cocktails inspired by each destination. Rock group Cobra Starship also made an appearance along with Boardwalk Empire star, Paz de la Huerta and model Liya Kebede.
Global brand leader Eva Ziegler mentioned how some of ready-to-wear designs could transform into interior design projects for some of the rooms in the W Hotels in the future. In the meanwhile, the collection will be available for purchase starting in August exclusively at boutiques within the hotels around the world and online.
