With the word “Recession” looming over our heads, it’s hard to think of doling out hundreds of dollars for that perfect….. ANYTHING. Who wouldn’t want to just spend, spend, spend? With the consumer in mind, U.S. and international editions of Vogue are organizing a world wide evening to celebrate and promote commerce in their fashion capitals. Here in the U.S., American Vogue partnered with NYC & Company, the City of New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have come together to breathe renewed life into the consumer spirit in America’s fashion capitol……New York City! As you know fashion is the second largest industry in The Big Apple. New York is the headquarters of more than 800 fashion companies. Combined these companies employ over 175,000 people. Can you imagine the revenue that comes in from all that man power? During New York’s City Hall press conference announcing the extravaganza, Vera Wang stated “To put it bluntly, if people don’t shop, people lose their jobs”.
The collective partnership picked September 10th for Fashion’s Night Out, as it is the first evening of New York Fashion Week. What should be expected? Because this is in fact a celebration of both proprietors and patrons, you should expect to be involved in one huge after party throughout the city. All fashion retailers across the five boroughs have been asked to keep their doors open late. Window displays, model and celeb-model appearances, refreshments(yes that includes champagne), musical performances, barbecues, shoe capsules, limited-edition rings, makeovers, brow bars and haircut stations are some of the perks to participating in Fashion’s Night Out .
A commemorative Fashion’s Night Out T-shirt has been commissioned for New York City and will be available at retail locations throughout the U.S.(however those locations will have to purchase the t-shirt). From the sales of the t-shirt, 40 percent will be donated by the retailers to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center. Also during Fashion’s Night Out there will be a citywide clothing drive. The clothing drive will benefit the NYC AIDS Fund.
I suggest that we all make our way to FASHION’S NIGHT OUT or celebrate in your own cities. As this will prove another way that we can come together during trying times!
