The story centers around several survivors who link together in unexpected ways. Hayden Christensen‘s Luke offers a brooding self centered approach to survival, concentrating mainly on keeping only himself alive before running into James (Jacob Latimore) an old soul who after the loss of his mother is confined to the bar which she left him to guard. It isn’t long before this duo expands to a quartet to include a nurse (Thandie Newton) and a movie theater tech (John Leguizamo). Leguizamo’s Paul is a quiet reserved fellow who spends his time immersed in books. It is through his reading that answers to their predicament are discovered.
In the tradition of great directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Anderson allows the story to unfold as it may without reliance on special effects and flashy camera tricks. The special effects that are used are important tot he story line and never for the sake of technology. One of the most disturbing scenes shows a plane simply falling from the sky. It passes over the city and crashes behind Christenson, its appearance is eerily slow and deliberate a strange sight in a world of stillness created by the darkness. Unlike other films in this genre the threat that plagues the city is an unseen force attacking willfully at random
Thought provoking, disturbing and likely the scariest film I’ve seen in a long while Vanishing is worth seeing, discussing and debating. Its symbolism and simplicity inspire a great deal of thought and is worth exploration. Entertaining and fast paced this film captures the human spirit and questions existence. Though gore and violence are kept to a minimum children under 12 who are prone to nightmares may not be ready for this one. Grab some grownups and head to the theaters, for this one and if you’re smart you’ll invest in a night light.
