Interior design for 2013 has been dominated by strong, personal and highly imaginative styles. One of the biggest sources of inspiration has been the natural world, spurred on by a concern for the environment and a more global outlook, something that looks set to continue into the colder season. Here are some of the trends that have dominated 2013 so far, along with those to watch out for as we move into fall and winter.
Color
In terms of color, bold is definitely in. 2013’s color of the year is emerald, the color of “growth, renewal, and prosperity”, although a number of equally vibrant colors, including raspberry, orange, purple and denim blue have seen an equal rise in interest. Paint colors are getting brighter and unique colors and finishes are more and more commonplace.
Lighting
Lamps have become a fashion accessory of the home and there is no end to the glamour of 2013’s lighting. Glazed ceramic lamps and oversized brass pendants add a touch of opulence to any room.
Brass is trending all over the place, in both modern and contemporary design spaces. This metal has a patina that only looks better with age and is timeless and affordable, able to add warmth to an interior with an elegant gleam to its rich, golden tones.
Use of natural materials
Design has become more relaxed in 2013 and sustainability has become relevant. There is a new appreciation for natural as well as organically sourced materials such as wood, natural fibers and even stone, which can all be used in interior design to add warmth, while making a statement that this homeowner is conscious of their carbon footprint.
Vertical gardens are one of this year’s biggest trends, both outdoors and inside, with 2012’s big hit, the Japanese variant of Bonsai, ‘Kokedama’ continuing to inspire creative indoor gardeners.
Upcycled furnishings continue the shabby chic trend with an updated eco-theme, as old furniture is given a new lease of life with a bright new paint job, while kitchens are less slick and more homely.
Wood burning stoves are also a hit this year, especially so as we head into fall and winter. As an extension of the natural and environmentally conscious theme, wood burning stoves can look great in a shabby chic room and really make a statement.
Art in interior design
Art is no longer just for the wall, but has become an integral part of soft furnishings, fabrics and furniture, in prints as well as in outlook. Historic and contemporary works have become integrated, and art in general is now more accessible; check out your town for the next art fairs, these public events are becoming more and more of a common sight.
Wall art is no longer just flat, textured wallpaper and 3D wall tiles allow for unlimited options in terms of depth, texture and color and are just so exciting!
Prints and fabrics
Fashion and furnishing have become more and more connected. Prints and patterns are not only beautiful, they also reflect the space they’re placed in. 2013 has witnessed a revival of floral prints in modern and exotic designs, with bold tones really standing out on plain, white backdrops. As an extension to the eco-look, natural weaves and organic, unbleached cotton have grown ever more popular.
The floral trend is not just about petals; however, unusual floral elements such as grasses, leaves, and seed heads are also trending in 2013, while this fall season, preppy patterns and prints and tailored upholstery will be making a comeback.
