Cancer has claimed the lives of millions of people worldwide. It is a deadly killer and the great equalizer as it does not discriminate between class, race, or social standing. It is one of the leading causes of fatality the world over. The war against this deadly illness involves a great deal of time, effort and research, all of which comes at a price that many who face it simply can not afford to face alone. The Samuel Waxman Foundation is one of the leading organizations fighting for a cure. Since 1976 they have raised more than 80 million in support of researchers world-wide. Though there have been great strides over all the war is far from over. Last Friday the elite of New York City gathered for the 15th annual Collaborating for a cure Auction. The event, hosted by Michael and Elin Nierenberg, was held at the park avenue armory, a glorious space rich with history and vitality. The armory was home to New York State’s Seventh Regiment of the National Guard. This regiment was the first volunteer militia to respond to President Lincoln’s call for troops in 1861. Much like the troops were called into service nearly 1000 of New York’s City’s upper crust were called to lend their support to a worthy cause by purchasing tickets to the auction and bidding on donated items.
Though the event highlighted some serious social concerns there was fun to be had as we celebrated the strides made thus far. The festivities also included a touching video and two very special awards. Fashion Designer Carmen Marc Valvo, a ten-year colon cancer survivor was given the humanitarian award, also honored at the event were Dale and Peter Claman who received the distinguished service award for all of their hard work and dedication. Dale Guests enjoyed premium cocktails as well as a three course gourmet meal. After dinner the real excitement began as participants bid on a wide array of fabulous prizes including adorable lab puppies which went for $8000 each. The highest bid of the night was for a luxurious vacation aboard a yacht for $125,000. By the end of the evening the foundation had raised more than $4 million for cancer research. After the auction classic rock enthusiasts were delighted with a performance by the Warren Haynes band featuring legendary musicians Peter Frampton and Gregg Allman.
Friday’s soiree is one of several events the foundation hosts in order to raise money as well as awareness. While you may have missed this party rest assured there will be future opportunities to lend your support to this worthy cause. While you may live as one of the lucky few who have not yet been touched by this illness odds are some one you know is suffering directly or indirectly from its fatal embrace. This season take the time and be thankful for those who have survived and fight valiantly for those we may lose or have lost already.
