Mos Def

Days away from the highly anticipated release of Lupe Fiasco‘s highly anticipated album,  L.A.S.E.R.S, concert dates are popping up and holding a ticket to any date is like holding Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket. I was one of the lucky to hold a ticket to the last of his four ssold-outshows at the world famous Blue Note Jazz Club where he was a guest of the Robert Glasper Experiment on Saturday, February 24th.

BlackStar2010bFor me, aside from every album by A Tribe Called Quest, one of my favorite Hip Hop albums is Talib Kweli and Mos Def as Black Star. Everything from the beats by producers like 88-Keys and Hi-Tek to the lyrics is just mind-blowing. I can’t think of one song on that album that I don’t like.

AfroPunk Festival | Mos Def

I have lost count as to how many times I have seen Mos Def perform. One thing is for sure, Mos Def knows how to put on a show and you will get your money’s worth. It’s hard to describe what a typical Mos Def show is like. Depending on how he may feel, he may perform a show complete with very few of his own songs, but more like the songs from artists that influenced him like Nina Simone, Howling Wolf, or even Bell Biv DeVoe. He interacts with the crowd as if they are sitting in his living-room digging through old vinyl records or CDs. The fact remains, Mos Def is a storyteller. It is clear to the audience that each song and it’s order were given considerable thought.
