World-renowned mixologist Richard Woods crossed the pond recently to bring his expertise to the ever so popular SushiSamba brand in New York City. In case you didn’t know, Richard was named Global Head of Cocktail & Spirit Development for all of Samba Brand Management’s restaurant portfolio which in also includes the James Beard-nominated Sugarcane (Miami) & SUSHISAMBA (New York/Chicago/Las Vegas/Miami/London) in addition to Duck & Waffle.
He has created a completely new beverage program for SUSHISAMBA New York with his iconoclastic style –using house-made, avant-garde ingredients to create contemporary interpretations of classic cocktails with a South American twist.
One of my favorites was the SHISO FINE cocktail.
Tall and refreshing treat is perfect for the current heatwave that’s going around and would quench any thirst. This long drink is herbaceous and citrusy. Vodka infused with Shiso leaves, crème de pêche and house-made Thai basil syrup. Lengthened with apple and lime and served long, over crushed ice with a bleed of crème de cassis.
I also enjoyed WASABI COLLINS, made with Hendricks Gin, lemon juice, sugar, and elderflower – shaken hard with home-made wasabi sorbet. Served long over ice and charged with soda.
If you’re looking for a drink with a little kick, I would recommend this tall glass of sophistication.
Lastly, I sampled the SAMBA RAMBLE.
The classic UK born Bramble ‘Samba style’. Bombay gin, lemon and house-made star anise syrup. Churned over crushed ice and served short with a bleed of crème de mure. The cocktail was filled with amazing flavors and was not overbearing.
SushiSamba New York currently houses several other cocktails, all from the genius that is Richard Woods. The new cocktail menu is perfect for a date night, casual business meeting, or if you’re hitting the town with friends. Making it even more enjoyable are the prices which range from $12-14 (it’s so worth it). For $70 you can try the COCKTAIL TREE where you can sip on any 3 signature cocktails served in a 12-flight tasting tree.
Always Remember to Drink Responsibly!
