What might the Bronte sisters wear to a downtown soiree had they hung out with Amy Winehouse? Hands down, Sally LaPointe‘s Spring 2012 collection that debuted Friday, September 9, 2011.
Renwick Ruins, the abandoned smallpox hospital on Manhattan’s Roosevelt Island, served as LaPointe’s muse. This haunting structure inspired the interplay between romantic and edgy, gothic and modern featured in the designer’s Spring 2012 collection and show. With a palette ranging from muted blacks and grays to yellow lemons and powder pinks, LaPointe delivers her signature structured pieces in tulle, chiffon, and jersey juxtaposed with Ultrasuede, calfskin, and leather.
For LaPointe, a 27-year-old Tribeca resident who has designed for Lady Gaga, it’s all about the blending of hard and soft lines within sharp tailored pieces in gentle hues, flowered prints and metallic brocades. For the rest of us, it’s the opportunity to romance our gothic sides in a way that’s simultaneously modern and feminine.
