You may remember Keke Palmer as the sweet-faced little girl from The Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and countless films like Akeelah and The Bee, but this little lady is all grown up and starring in Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on Broadway. Palmer though a veteran in film and television makes her Broadway debut as fairy tale princess Cinderella. At the tender age of 21 Keke has the surprising distinction of being the youngest actress to play the familiar character. Her trademark comedic timing and fresh persona add depth and freshness to the decades-old character. Palmer may be known for her acting but Keke is a woman of many talents, after years of watching her act I had no idea this young woman could sing! Her voice is absolutely beautiful. Ms. Palmer isn’t the only familiar face on the stage. Veteran television personality and comedienne Sherri Shepherd is also part of the cast as the evil but hilarious stepmother, “Madame”. As the villain, the usually upbeat and fun Sherri is evil and cunning with a sharp tongue. Her cruelty knows no bounds as she takes great pleasure in tormenting the young dreamy-eyed Cinderella.
The story of Cinderella is one of the most celebrated or any fairy tale. The magic and romance have delighted and inspired many over the years. This latest production has been slightly updated to include a storyline with far more depth than previous versions. In this version, we learn so much more about the handsome prince and his kingdom as well as a deeper understanding of the evil step sisters. The talented cast keeps the play moving but the visual aspect is what truly makes it pop. The sets are beautiful and intricately crafted, but the costumes and special effects truly steal the show. Costume designer William Ivey Long brings life to the set with an amazing array of colorful ornate gowns. Long is also responsible for some of the unbelievable on-screen transformations. I can tell you the transformations are absolutely magical. One moment Cinderella is standing in her shabby dress and with a wave of a wand she is in a golden gown ready for the ball. There is no stand-in or disappearing behind a curtain the dress manifests right before your eyes like magic.
You need to see this musical. If you see no other production this year let Cinderella be the one. This is one of the few plays on Broadway that is truly fun for the entire family. It is funny, romantic and whimsical. This play will truly bring out the kid in even the most cynical adult.
