My companion and I were handed a tasting glass each of both red and white offerings to aid us in our beverage choice for the evening. After our beverage choices were made we began our meal with a round of appetizers. We opted for some light options and went with the beautiful crab cake and jumbo shrimp salad. The crab cake is a great example of the chef’s adventurous pairings. The outer layer had a warm crisp texture that held the moist tender inside together. The luscious crab cake is served with a light fresh garnish of cucumber, tomato petals and frisee.
The jumbo shrimp salad is a beautiful dish filled with color and flavor. The shrimp is juicy grilled perfection served a top a salad of baby arugula, baby spinach and a bright citrus dressing made from lemon confit.
Once our appetites were sufficiently revved up we were presented with our entrees. We ordered the ,mushroom encrusted halibut the Colorado rack of lamb and the special of the day mushroom risotto. The halibut is prepared with an outer crust of hazelnuts and presented with steamed asparagus and a delicious razor clam broth. The fish was thick and cooked perfectly. The sauce added just a touch more to the flavorful fish.
We are big meat eaters and could not pass up the chance at a beautiful rack of lamb. The meat was presented medium rare and was a beautiful pink on the inside with slightly charred outer layer. The lamb is served with a delicious helping of parsnip puree and buttery haricot vert.
The last of out entrees was the most decadent. The incredible mushroom risotto featured a generous portion of some of the finest mushrooms known to man. The morsels are sautéed beautifully and combined with luxurious imported black truffles. Not only is this dish given a large helping of freshly shaven black truffle the tender risotto is drizzled with premium truffle oil as a finishing touch. The smell of this dish alone is enough to increase salivation and the flavor is immeasurable. This is truly a wonderful treat that must be experienced.
My companion and I concluded our meal with two delectable desserts. My companion chose the lovely apple crisp. This is Tenpenny’s upscale variation on the classic apple pie à la mode. This dish features a warm apple tart with cool rich vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. It is lightly sweetened and the crust is buttery and delicious.
I opted for the white chocolate catalan. A catalan is a spanish version of creme brulee and is a popular spring dessert in the region of its origin. At Tenpenny it is served with a bright orange coulis, almond financier and fresh mixed berries.
A Tenpenny by definition is a monetary denomination meaning ten pennies or a popular nail for building. As it refers to this establishment we would define it as Midtown’s latest perfect 10 in flavor, presentation and service. It is a lasting tribute to the effects of hard work dedication and a respect for the basics in service. To place your reservations or learn more about he restaurant please visit tenpennynyc.com.
