Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn has a new gem everyone should check out. It’s called Sweet Catch and it brings the flavors of the Carolinas to New York City. The new hot spot is the brainchild of Ka-Wana Jefferson, a Bronx native, who has a passion for good culinary experiences. I stopped by on a beautiful Saturday morning for Brunch and was immediately captivated by the serene environment as you opened the doors. The space is decorated with a southern style decor and hosts many photos which showcase black culinary history and Heritage. Our waitress, Amanda, greeted us upon arriving and showed us to our seats where she went over the menu and explained her favorite dishes (she loved them all). Amanda was very knowledgeable about the menu and quite friendly. It felt like we were chatting with our homegirl, which we loved.
Some of the brunch menu items include homemade pancakes with sweet potato, maple syrup, and butter; Cornbread avocado toast, topped with a fried oyster, whipped goat cheese, and pickled red onions; and Tofu scramble made with marinated tofu, golden garlic, market veg, home fries.
We went the non-traditional route and started with butter Brielles Oyster to get our palettes ready for a tasty meal.
The crab-deviled eggs were up next. They are your traditional deviled eggs but with a dollop of juicy crab meat and no it’s no imitation crab! My guests and I loved how these little morsels just awaken our taste buds. This is a great start before your main course.
Personally, I’m exhausted at the thought of another boring chicken and waffle meal, so I was excited to see Sweet Catch BK switch things up. We opted for Fried lobster & shrimp on a cornbread waffle with maple syrup, parsley, and roasted garlic butter. I loved the twist on the waffle because sometimes, syrup just isn’t enough, especially after enjoying such delicious seafood. The waffles mixed well with the lobster and shrimp.
Shrimp & Grits should be on every brunch menu that exists. I could never get tired of it. This dish consists of 3 cheese stone ground grits, truffle oil, charred pepper, and onion jus. It was a good balance of flavors that would leave you wanting more. I would pair this with a nice serving of bacon.
What’s a brunch without cocktails? Although there are no unlimited options (which there should be…come on its brunch), they do offer delicious specialty cocktails. Since we were at an eatery with Caribbean flair, we opted for the punches. The King Street and Nassau Bay Punch. Both are tropical rum cocktails and are potent enough to give you and your meal and little kick.
Ka-wana Jefferson opened Sweet Catch BK in September 2022. The 1,100-square-foot restaurant welcomes up to 50 seated guests (in the main dining room and backyard patio). Their cuisine is inspired by the food created by enslaved Africans throughout the South specifically within the Gullah/Geechee community. Located within the heart of Prospect Lefferts Garden neighborhood of Brooklyn, Sweet Catch BK welcomes diners to experience their brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 11am until 4pm.
