For over 35 years Il Tinello has blessed Midtown Manhattan with its classic Italian cuisine. The west side has enjoyed a feast of handmade pasta sumptuous sauces and incredible hospitality and now that same energy has been brought to the east side. Just a few blocks from the historic Grand Central Station is Il Tinello’s 2nd location. The 75-seat dining space is in a cozy nook on 46th street. At the entrance step up a few stairs to the hostess and take in the quaint dimly lit area. We sat at a nice quiet table in the rear of the restaurant. Though the dining room is open the rear seating felt separate making it feel more intimate, perfect for date night or some really good “tea” with your besties.
Service starts the moment you are seated, before even the slightest glance at the menu we were served fresh bread, grilled crudité, and bruschetta. The staff is incredibly attentive and ran the service like a well-oiled machine.
Cocktails also are a part of this joyous experience with the 2nd Avenue Spritz with Litchi Liqueur, Prosecco, and St-Germaine Elderflower Liqueur; the New Fashion with Cincoro Reposado Tequila, Ramazzotti Amaro, fresh orange; and Side of 46th Street with Hennessy Cognac, Grand Marnier Liqueur, lemon juice.
After hearing the specials and a few moments of indecision we placed our order and settled in for a fantastic meal.
Meatballs
The meatballs are a select appetizer, juicy veal and pork blended orbs drenched in a smooth buttery mushroom gravy. The tender bits of mushroom were a welcome dose of intense umami flavor.
Tagliolini
A seafood lover’s dream, this massive plate of pasta includes tender clam, mussels, and scallops in a light sauce of olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs. This is a massive portion size perfect for sharing or a satisfying doggie bag.
Veal Parmigiana
For a decadent treat, we went with the classic veal parm. A flattened breaded veal patty deep fried and covered in an herbaceous tomato sauce and ooey gooey mozzarella cheese. Surprisingly it wasn’t served with spaghetti, we enjoyed it with a serving of mixed veggies instead.
Tartufo
All good things must come to an end no meal should end without dessert. We finished strong with another classic, Tartufo. This dessert is made up of creamy ice cream coated with hard chocolate. In the center is a sweet maraschino cherry.
Il Tinello offers an evening of classic Italian fare in a warm inviting space. The staff is friendly and accommodating offering their wine-pairing expertise and five-star hospitality. Their dedication to your enjoyment coupled with the relaxed atmosphere creates a perfect space for deep conversations over a delectable meal. So do yourself a favor and take a break from whatever is trending and treat someone special to a great meal at Il Tinello.
