Every once in a while you must release you inner carnivore. This primal instinct is ingrained in all non vegetarians and is as natural as breathing. This past weekend my companion and I quenched our thirst for meat at Bobby Van’s Grill. There are several location across the city, for our night out we chose the 50th street location, just a quick block from the #1 subway station. The dimly lit venue is divided into two parts, a comfortable bar lounge and an upscale dining room. The space is bathed in soft amber light for a warm inviting feeling. Uniformed servers litter the room preparing table side entrees and providing full meal service. A few short moments after being seated we were greeted and served an array of warm artisan breads and whipped butter.
We began our dinner with the sweet sausage pizza. Though usually an entree we thought the warm pizza would be a great appetizer and we weren’t disappointed The thin crust help up the mounds or warm melted cheese and crunchy morsels of savory sausage perfectly.
Once the pizza was devoured and our appetites were revved up we were presented with our meaty entrees. My companion ordered the lasagna Bolognese. This beautiful dish is filled with gooey mozzarella cheese, three different meats and just enough garlic and herb infused sauce. The Italian staple arrived piping hot with bubbling cheese.
While we waited for this to cool we turned our attention to the roasted pork chops. We received two huge chops surrounded by roasted potatoes and broccoli rabe. Despite their size the well seasoned chops were moist and tender. The outside was crisp with just enough char but the inside was soft and juicy. The chops are a must have for any meat lover.
After such amazing dishes we were full but no one is ever too full for ice cream, when we saw it on the dessert menu we simply could not pass it up. The ice cream confection is billed as a dessert for two but could easily satisfy four. The mountainous creation is filled with hot fudge, strawberry sauce nuts bananas and warm chocolate brownie, oh my!
Bobby Van’s Grill is one of the few old-fashioned dining experiences left in NY. While new restaurants are exciting and fun, nothing can take the place of great food and amazing service. The opportunity to not only be fed but fed well and pampered is one that should not be missed. Take a chance and treat yourself or a loved one to a delicious meal and first class service, you deserve it.
