A Place Called Home honored Robyn Browning (Herbalife Family Foundation), Lisa Licht (Yahoo), Maryann Walker (Walker Advertising), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Andrea Navedo (Jane the Virgin), and Ivonne Coll (Jane the Virgin) at the 11th Annual GirlPower Awards Luncheon this past Thursday. “A Place Called Home is a safe haven in South Central Los Angeles where underserved youth are empowered to take ownership of the quality and direction of their lives through programs in education, arts, and well-being, and are inspired to make a meaningful difference in their community and the world.”
Those that were honored possess outstanding civic, community and professional achievements. APCH also celebrated a group of young women who have thrived as part of APCH’s GirlPower Project; a “year-long program that inspires inner-city ‘tweens and teens to discover the beauty and strength of their minds and spirits, and teaches them skills that will empower them to transition into womanhood and lead productive lives.”
Before the luncheon, there was a reception and a boutique. Bead Relief, a company who helps “non-profit organizations raise awareness and donations for their cause” was on hand selling custom-made bracelets. Everyone in attendance received a complimentary beaded bracelet that was specifically made for APCH. Juice Crafters gave out samples of their popular cold-pressed juices while The Treasured Accessory displayed and sold their high-end fashion jewelry. There was also a silent auction where attendees could either bid on purses from Vince Camuto and Chanel or donate money to purchase musical instruments and horseback riding lesson for APCH.
The afternoon was a complete success. An organization that focuses on strengthening the LA community by strengthening its youth put together a great event that both its supporters and its program participants could enjoy.
