Seven designers showcase a collection of five pieces each with the finest SUPIMA cotton from its minimal state to breathtaking creations all in the hopes of being chosen as the winner and walk away with a,000 prize. The seven designers were Karen Dang (Academy of Art), Nnamdi Agum (FIT), Paige Meacham (Kent State), Leetal Platt (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Laren Nahigian (Pratt), Julia Han (Rhode Island School of Design) and Kate McKenna (Savannah College of Art & Design). Each designer will certainly make a mark in the future of fashion one way or another.
Some of my personal favorite pieces were as follows-Nnamdi Agum’s mixed berry corduroy cage top and belted high waist trumpet skirt and another gown had hand-printed floral print fit for framing. Paige Meacham’s digitally printed cityscapes on her pieces were beyond exquisite and intricate ruffle details both showed craftsmanship. Lauren Nahigian’s navy tea-length dress with floral laser cut plastic appliques very eye-catching.
However, there can only be one winner in every competition, Kate McKenna whose inspiration for the color indigo was executed exceptionally. The two pieces which stood out to me were a denim ball gown separates and a cropped jacket with beautiful hand-woven detail and an exaggerated A-line gown in indigo ombre with a hand-woven neckline suitable for any body type.
One chose but all winners in that they got to showcase their talents and be an addition to NYFW Sept 2015 which is a prize in and of itself, congrats to all!!!
