Russian born fashion designer Olyia Mimkho showed her very first collection for New York’s Fashion Week. The very talented Olyia’s fall 2010 womens line which goes by her last name”MIMKHO” was viewed at an intimate location away from the Bryant Park frenzy at a warehouse studio on the 12th floor of 450 west 31st street. Beautiful wearable dresses came down the runway made from fabrics that were all natural. The color palette that Mimkho used for her breathtaking designs reminded me of the fallen leaves in central park during the fall. The mood of the collection was deeply felt by the somber ambient music that played while swaying models slowly walked down the runway. Imperial Russia meets simple country village folk costumes and the beginning of the Soviet Era is what Olyia wanted to capture and definitely it showed that her idea was clear and focused. Her inspiration came from looking at her Russian background, visiting flea markets, antique stores and old bookstores. Her fascination grew stronger by these things and by the stories that her grandmother would tell about her heritage and roots during WWII and the communist era. She imagined on what her first collection would be and came to the realization that it had to come from within.
