New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) advocates for equality in the moving image industry and supports women in every stage of their careers. NYWIFT is part of a network of 50 women in film chapters worldwide, representing more than 15,000 members. The organization hosts an annual Designing Women Awards Gala, which honors women who often go unnoticed while working behind the scenes, This year marked the 19th anniversary of the inspiring event. It was held on Monday, May 21st at Stage 48 in New York City. Guests included actors, producers, directors, writers, fashion aficionados, and many more. Comedian Sunda Croonquist hosted the evening’s festivities.
We love this event because this is where distinguished makeup artists, hair stylists, and costume designers are celebrated. When asked about the awards, Terry Lawler, Executive Director of NYWIFT says, “The Designing Women Awards is one of my favorite events of the year because it allows us to recognize the contributions of incredible entertainment professionals who are rarely in the spotlight – those behind the scenes. Without the artistry and work of these exceptionally talented women, the film and television characters that we love could not exist. It’s essential that we commemorate the value that each and every single one of these amazing women brings to the industry.”
The ceremony was starstudded with Actors Christine Ebersole and Maggie Gyllenhaal presented hair stylist Anita Lausevic with a Designing Women Award, along with a special video tribute from Mark Feuerstein.
Costume Designer Dana Covarrubias received her award from actor Jamie Lee, with Lena Waithe sending her well-wishes via video.
