Movies and Bingo have two fantastic features in common – they’re both make for fantastic nights out and fantastic nights in – that and we love them both! In fact, we love movies and Bingo so much we thought we’d see how many movies Bingo had featured in – and here are our favorite 5 movies with a Bingo theme.
Beach
This 60’s movie was one of a batch of typical beach-party movies of that time. Starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, it is set in Malibu where the story centers on a pop star named Sugar Kane who is the focus of kidnap plot by motorcycle gang-leader Eric Von Zipper. Desperate for publicity, Sugar Kane is even willing to endure the dangers of sky-diving to get it. The plot is set against sunshine, teenagers and mermaids – and it’s not half bad – but the ultimate question is which whether it will be Kane or Von-Zipper who land the jackpot? Find out more here.
The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976)
This 70’s movie was produced by legendary Motown icon Berry Gordy and directed by John Badham, and is based on a well-known novel. Though this movie is basically a comedy, it does delve into the racial segregation that went hand in hand with the Negro baseball league of the 1930’s and was extremely political for its time. Billy Dee Williams plays the protagonist Billy Long, who is the charismatic pitcher who is treated by the team’s management, and is fed up of it, whilst it also stars the much missed Richard Pryor and James Earl Jones. The tale is told through the eyes of the Black sports-stars, with the conflict leading to a “winner-takes-all game”. I don’t want to give you any more information – apart from the fact that they play to a full-house.
Bingo (1991)
This is such a heart-warming movie that the writer decided to call his pooch-protagonist Bingo. The plot revolves around a friendless young boy and a dog whose owners abandon him who find each other and fill the gaping hole in each other’s life. I’m not spoiling the film at all by telling you there’s a happy ending – because with a dog called Bingo – you kind of knew there had to be!
1940’s Harlem and the depression is the backdrop for African-American Sonny’s struggling attempts to support his family which he loves more than life itself. As he struggles to find work, Sonny finds solace in a bingo hall where he hopes to get lucky and make enough money to buy all the food and cloths his expectant wife and imminent-to-be born child need. A bit of luck is something everyone needs – which is why the fact Butler’s Bingo are willing to give new customers £10 of free online Bingo tickets makes us all very lucky indeed.
Bingo! The Documentary (1999)
Despite the fact that Bingo has become a globally played phenomenon, there are many people who still see Bingo through stereotypical tinted-glasses of purple haired grannies, and this documentary was made to squash that train of thought. It shows footage of people enjoying Bingo for popular pastime via a series of interviewed Bingo players. Filmed in both Europe and the United States, if you don’t like Bingo – this docu-film will certainly make you change your mind.
With this film being made in1999, when Bingo wasn’t even being played online, it would be amazing to see Jeffcoat make a modern day follow-up – just so that everyone could see how much players enjoy playing Online Bingo today.
This was brought to you in association with bingo site Butlers Bingo who love the game of Bingo.
