New York City is gripped by the maniacal clutches of a ferocious street gang known as “The Foot”. ย The gangs terrorist acts are closely monitored by fledgling reporter April O’Neal (Fox). While hot on the trail of the gang’s latest heist she and her snarky camera man (Arnett) discover the city’s saving grace. ย This is a story that could make her entire career, if only someone would believe her tall tale about the 6ft tall sewer dwelling mutant turtles sworn to protect the city. Her excitement turns to terror as she is thrust into a battle with her new friends as they risk it all to save the city they love from the infamous “Shredder”.
Since
Thanks to the advancement of CGI and 3D technology, this version is a more visual and stylized versionย of our favorite foursome. The turtles are grittier, bigger, tougher and incredibly buff. Though they may look different, they haven’t lost their humor or camaraderie. Anyone who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s will remember the team and their distinct personalities. Former fans can rejoice as the new film only magnifies those qualitiesย without creating a campy nightmare. Though some of the dialogue is really cheesy and forced ย it is a vastly enjoyable movie. Movie goersย will also enjoy a glimpse into the turtle’s back story as this adaptation gives a deeper insight into how the turtles came to be and why their destiny will always be entwined with April’s. Expect a more violent and energetic film, with an abundance of high octane battle scenes and intense stunts. The film is offered in 3D and thankfully there are several scenes that warrant the extra expense. One of the best scenes in the film involves the turtles careening down a snow-capped mountain with a tractor trailer while fending off a horde of angry “foot” solders.
As expected, the film is predictable from start to finish but there is a charm and reverence that makes it enjoyable. It is an easy thought free action adventure that the entire family can enjoy. Despite the copious amounts of violence there is no blood, it’s just good old-fashioned cartoon violence. Old fans can relive their glory days remembering the antics and banter of their youth while introducing new fans to the wonder and excitement that is “Turtle Power.”
