John Bennet (Wahlberg) was a lonely child until a Christmas miracle brought his teddy bear Ted (MacFarlane) to life. If you grew up in the eighties and nineties this is an all too familiar premise. Typically the child who makes the wish is the only one who can see and hear the formerly inanimate object. Usually the magic or spell is broken just in time for puberty leaving the once lonely child with a gang of new friends and incredible confidence. This is not your typical movie so the usual rules do not apply. Ted not only survives well into adulthood, he is a walking, talking foul-mouthed 35-year-old bear that John can’t live without. After over 20 years of friendship their union is finally tested by Lori the love of John’s life, who wants John to be a man and Ted to be gone.
Told with MacFarlane’s trademark humor the movie is filled with unlikely circumstances, surprisingly real dialogue and hilarious scenes you will want to see again and again. Though a teddy bear come to life may not be a new plot point, MacFarlane takes the concept to a new level in ways only he can. Though Ted may look cute and cuddly, if you know anything about Seth’s work you know this isn’t a movie for the little ones. The sexual tones and strong language is far too obscene for children under 17. Leave the babies with a sitter and go see this one with some Family Guy fans who may actually get the pop references and see beyond the usual crude humor to the sweet love story beneath.
For heaven’s sake, it’s an adult movie about a talking, cursing, drug abusing womanizing Teddy Bear, how can you NOT want to see it?
TED hits theaters this Friday, June 29th!
