Writer: Jonathan Hensleigh
Cast: Ray Stevenson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Paul Sorvino
“Kill The Irishman” is an action packed crime drama based on the real life of Irish Mobster Danny Greene. Set in Cleveland in the late 70’s the film chronicles the heated summer of 1976, when the streets of Cleveland were rocked by the sounds of an explosion filled turf war. Starting from Greene’s humble beginnings working the docks and into his rise in the organized crime circuit the action is non stop start to finish. As one would expect from a mob themed movie there is a great deal of gun play and violence, however there is also humor and heart. A good man at heart Greene’s lofty ideas lead him down a rode that costs him his family, his friends and eventually his own life.
The all star ensemble cast featured several familiar faces from a few of our favorite mafia themed movies and hit TV shows , most notably Christopher Walken. A legend in his own right, Walken steals every scene. His portrayal of loan shark Shondor Birns, is lighthearted and funny hitting audiences with punchlines and one-liners with the ease of a seasoned pro. Also cast are Soprano’s star Steve Schirripa and “Good Fella” Tony Darrow. New Comer to the mob Scene Ray Stevenson, though no stranger to violent characters, makes his mobster debt as the infamous Danny Greene.
From his very first scene to his last Stevenson commands the screen, his portrayal of Greene is masterful and intense. A layered and complex character Greene’s drive and perseverance land him in hot water with the surrounding families resulting in his being marked for death. Just as his rise in the crime syndicate would be slow in coming so would his death more than 8 attempts were taken before he was finally murdered. Greene was an enigmatic character whose life was the substance from which legends are made, making for serious box office magic.
Filled with humor, non stop action and a phenomenal cast “Kill The Irishman” is one of the most entertaining movies you’ll see this year. If you still have any doubts Fuhgeddaboutit! I have two words for you: Christopher Walken.
