A teenager and her divorced mom move from a major city into a small suburban town. It isn’t long before they discover that their reasonably priced home is due in part to a series of murders next door. What’s even more surprising is that a survivor of the massacre still inhabits the home. As the daughter befriends the survivor the mystery surrounding the murder is finally revealed providing. Movie goers will remember Lawrence from this Summer’s Hunger Games. Though she may have gone from brunette to blond she does not lose her edge for this film. She steps onto the scene providing energy and heart to the suspenseful flick. Though billed as a horror movie it is more suspense thriller than horror.Don’t got to this movie expecting to predict each scene as all typical horror rules are broken then twisted into something new. Max Thierot as the creepy guy next door is equal parts heartthrob and weirdo. His smoldering eyes and sad expression heighten the suspense and drama.
Though this is a horror film the gore and special effects are kept to a minimum. In my opinion that is what makes it scarier. The threats are real, tangible and plausible unlike many of the season’s other offerings. Don’t see this film expecting to be scared of ghosts or the supernatural. Go and find yourself afraid of the things you don’t see.
