After a string of neighbors and his best friend disappear Charley Brewster (Yelchin) suspects his neighbor Jerry (Farrell) is a vampire. His suspicions are confirmed after witnessing the death of a neighbor at the hands of the demon. Brewster’s new-found knowledge only brings him trouble as he embarks on a quest to save his loved ones from the Vampire. Along the way he enlists the help of Vegas performer Scary and comical this retelling of the 1985 cult classic of the same name offers as many laughs as frights and is one of the better movies released this summer. The usually smoldering Farrell unleashes his dark side in this role getting downright creepy at times. Yelchin as the hero isn’t the popular kid in class nor the strongest so his approach his logical, believable and just a little bit dorky making for some of the films biggest laughs and shocking moments. The movie also features a cameo from one of the original stars, that horror geeks will love.
If the academy gave gold statues to fun enjoyable films this would be in the running. Its action packed from the start with enough gasps and laughs to keep you glued to the screen from opening to end. Children under 10 or the imaginative and nightmare prone little ones should skip this one. The images and violence may be too much for them. This film like so many others released this year is also in 3d. While there are a few cool moments that are twice as cool in 3d the extra dimension adds very little to the film. If you can live without those awful little glasses, trust us you wont miss much. Whether 2 or 3d this a movie worth the money and even though it won’t win an Oscar you can bet it will be a front-runner on the MTV Movie Awards.
