I have lost count as to how many times I have seen Lupe Fiasco in concert, but I am fortunate to have seen him grow in his popularity. I’ve seen him go from being the opening act for artists such as The Roots and Kanye West to the headliner of his own tour, Steppin’ Lasers. The Steppin’ Lasers Tour, which kicked off in Clairemont, CA on March 5th, features special guests Philly’s own, Dosage and break-out sensation from Atlanta, B.O.B.
No Lupe Fiasco show is ever the same. No matter how many times I go to see him, he always adds an element of surprise for me, which keeps me excited about attending his shows. The first time I saw him perform was in 2006 at SOBs. When he woo’d me with a verse from his song Sunshine, of course I became an instant fan, but he surprised the whole audience with a special guest appearance from Kanye West. Years, and Grammy nominations later (Nominated 8 times and winner for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for Daydreamin’ in 2008), no matter the size of the crowd, Lupe still remains personable and humble in his performance. Backed by a live band and his DJ, Simon Sayz, Lupe Fiasco gave the Atlantic City crowd exactly what they wanted, a cornucopia of songs from his albums Food and Liquor and The Cool, and even more with a glimpse into the tracks that would make up his yet to be released album, Lasers.
Lupe Fiasco uses social networking (Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace) very well. He uses it as a key tool to keep his fans connected with his music and his philosophies. Days after the start of his tour, he posted for all those attending his upcoming shows to be in uniform:
1. Black T-Shirt
2. Black Shoes Or Boots
3. Black Shades
4. Camoflauge Pants
For the encore of his show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ, Lupe surveyed the audience of those who followed the dress code. 20-25 fans were pulled up on to the stage and were proclaimed by Lupe as the “Laser Army” and posed with him for a picture. Immediately following, Lupe performed his hit Daydreamin’ with these excited fans supporting him on the stage.
When Lupe Fiasco came on the scene he became infamously pinned as the skateboard rapper. Time and time again Lupe has proven in his music and his social activism, that there is more to him. If you listen closely you will discover that Lupe Fiasco represents a piece of all of us. I personally have no clue how to ride a skateboard and I have never lived in an environment that was privy to crime. I do relate to an individual, who at times, feels like the underdog in this society, but continues to over come obstacles along life’s journey. I am not a Loser, I am a Laser.
