Mongolian designer Katya Zol presented a stunning runway collection part of the Fall/Winter 2014 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Sunday, February 9. The show opened with a performance Cirque du Soleil style with a singer in a native head dress, vocalizing to the sounds of the Mongolian region, followed by an acrobatic gentleman who held various poses upside down, sideways and otherwise using a small chair on the runway. Zol certainly set the stage for her collection that followed – a glorious array of colors, fabrics and styling, evoking the Mongolian spirit throughout.

In addition to playing with color, Zol also utilized fabrics including lace and leather patchwork, as well as a few kimono style fabrics in the collection, including a show stopper one sleeve. A particular look that caught the eye of many in the audience and in Zol’s finale was a fitted white long sleeve floor length dress with beading down the length of the spine of the back and around the neck. A cool look that the every day woman could pull off was a neutral off-the-shoulder, knee length dress paired with a skin colored turtle neck underneath, so it looked revealing but office appropriate. Other interesting looks included a black and white cow printed long coat hung to reveal a sexy golden sequined dress under.
Zol utilized simple hair and make up styles. The models were fashioned with long braids tied with gold and large, gold dangling earrings. Each model had a line of gold face paint stretching down the length of her forehead to her chin, in keeping with the native inspiration of the collection.
The music, the acrobatics and most importantly, the collection, really gave the audience a look at the beauty of the Mongolian region and spirit.
