Location: 63 Gansevoort Street
Cuisine: American
Best Dish: The Tuna Tartare is one of the best we’ve had. The crispy wonton chips added a level of texture that we didn’t even know was missing. The chicken sliders are also a must have. The savory chicken and crisp fresh slaw worked well with the sweet Hawaiian bun.
Overall: A contemporary lounge ideal for a night out with friends or a first date. The impressive space offers a beautiful backdrop for a night of small plates and good vibes.
The Meatpacking District is one of the most popular neighborhoods for socializing. This trendsetting destination has a reputation for hosting the hottest parties and most sought after venues. We ventured to this wondrous locale for dinner one evening at one of the newest additions to its constantly evolving landscape. Invite Only is an upscale lounge and restaurant nestled in the middle of the quaint cobblestone of Gansevoort Street. The lounge is lushly furnished with rich velvety tones and a sparkling chandelier. Despite the sophisticated surroundings, the venue has a relaxed vibe and casual atmosphere.
Upon arrival we were greeted warmly by the hostess and seated quickly in an indoor booth, overlooking the seasonal patio setting. We settled in and started our night with a round of drinks. The “Suite 100” was the first cocktail of the evening. This cool and refreshing Bourbon based cocktail features Sweet tea, Buffalo Trace Bourbon, lemon juice and homemade ginger syrup.
For a stronger, less sweet bourbon cocktail we recommend the “Sunset Blvd” a spirited mixture of Michter’s Bourbon, fresh lemon juice, and raspberries.
While enjoying our cocktails we also sampled the Tuna Tartare. Every chef prepares this dish differently. Some prefer a straight forward approach presenting the prized tuna on its own. Others take it to new heights with their own spin. The chef at Invite Only is from the latter school of thought and presented the fresh tuna with ginger, shallots and a generous helping of wonton chips for much-needed texture.
After the tartare, we went with an equally light dish affectionately called “Nonna’s Gravy”. The “gravy” in this dish is actually a light Pomodoro tomato sauce. The warm sauce is served with thin slices of prosciutto and crisp garlic bread for dipping.
As a rule, all self-respecting bars must serve sliders and wings. Invite Only took this unwritten rule and presented a hybrid of the duo; fried chicken sliders. This isn’t your typical beef on mini bun sandwich it is a warm and filling fried chicken masterpiece. Juicy fried chicken is topped with cajun coleslaw and served in a soft buttery Hawaiin bun with a side of macaroni salad.
For our final dish we went with the “Mash Burger” a big beefy burger topped with caramelized onions and jalapeno queso on a soft brioche bun. The burger is served with a helping of spicy pickled veggies and a lightly dressed side salad.
Though the name conjures up images of velvet ropes and big mean bouncers, Invite Only is an inviting friendly space. The staff is knowledgeable, welcoming and attentive without hovering. In addition to delicious food and fab drinks, Invite Only also features live entertainment and a DJ on select nights.
