The Girl Scouts of Greater New York is New York City’s premier girls’ leadership organization, reaching nearly 28,000 girls ages 5 to 17 in every zip code of the five boroughs. Girl Scouts enjoy STEM, business and entrepreneurship, environmental leadership and outdoor education, take-action, and global citizenship programs, as well as activities across 1,200 troops led by more than 8,200 volunteers. This year the organization turned 100 years old. On Monday, May 1, the Girl Scouts of Greater New York (GSGNY), held their annual Gold Achievement Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street, where guests raised money to support growing programs for nearly 28,000 girls, 70% from low to moderate income homes. At the gala, GSGNY honored three extraordinary women leaders in New York City who exemplify the highest level of achievement. The honorees were Ellen Levine, Hearst; Susan Nitze, Civic Leader and Philanthropist; and Marty Willis, Chief Marketing Officer, Nuveen.
This year’s gala chairs were GSGNY Board Members Liz Gateley and Suzanne Yadav. In the past year, GSGNY has continued to expand programming, launching a new after-school program, “Breaking the Code” to teach girls coding, and a new Urban Day Camp to help combat summer learning loss. Both programs target girls in underserved neighborhoods and introduce them to the Girl Scouts’ signature leadership development experience. All Girl Scout programs are designed to give girls the skills and confidence they need to lead and succeed in the 21st century, in the areas of Business & Entrepreneurship, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics), and Environmental Leadership. The Girl Scouting experience is based on experiential learning and girl-led projects.
