Bumsuk Choi, the creative mind behind the menswear label, General Idea, launched his debut collection in the Spring of 2004. As a native of Korea, Bumsuk is the youngest designer to join the Seoul Collection in the Republic of Korea. Since the start of its inception, General Idea has succeeded in building an international brand as well as collaborating with many major labels worldwide. Choi’s aesthetic is very instinctual and he finds inspiration from his international discoveries and innovative trends.
For the Fall/Winter 2013 collection, Bumsuk Choi was inspired by “(The Path to Buddha) A Tibetan Pilgrimage” by Steve McCurry. The intimate portraits of Tibetans on their personal journeys inspired the overarching nomadic theme of the collection. The collection included darker shades of green and navy and bold hues of orange and royal blue. Included in the color palette was a mix of black, white and taupe. The pieces were functional and utilitarian detailing a combination of sleekness and interesting layering. Pieces such as the navy blue varsity jacket with gold buttons blue and white stripe detail and the navy blue high collar with quilt red sleeves tan drawstring coat were some of the stand out editions to the collection. Notable celebrities in attendance were rapper Vinny Cha$e, actor Eric West, ice skater Johnny Weir and filmmaker Andrew Jenks.
