Cruises on the Hudson are a Summertime thrill that we look forward to every year. The warm breeze and scenic landscape have become a familiar and cherished indulgence. One our favorite ways to cruise is with Classic Harbor Line. Their well-managed fleet always provides a fun, safe experience. Their most luxurious vessels are the Manhattan and Manhattan II. Each yacht is designed with classic details, featuring a bright interior lounge below as well as a magnificent outer deck with seating. Last year we spent a full day on their cruise to Poughkeepsie. This year we decided to try their Bear Mountain excursion. The Bear Mountain cruise begins at pier 62 in Chelsea, from there it’s a three-hour cruise to Bear Mountain State Park. The ship docks for three full hours at the park before heading back to Chelsea.
The full package tour includes a breakfast buffet, snacks, and a down-river picnic. The meals are curated by Chef Wendy and she always provides a bountiful selection of tasty options. Breakfast begins with assorted bagels and pastries, smoked salmon and waffles, followed by a massive quiche and sausage, then a dessert course of mini pastries. Guests may also opt out of food service for a lesser price, but we recommend taking advantage of the full experience. Though packing your own meal may save you a few dollars on tickets, the difference in price doesn’t compare to the quality you get for just a few more dollars. Save yourself the hassle of buying and packing meals and truly immerse yourself in luxury. Guests are also offered one complimentary beverage each way. The boat is also equipped with a fully stocked bar for additional drinks.
The ride up-river to Bear Mountain is soothing and relaxing. Expect views of the Hudson River Valley, George Washington Bridge, and the forever changing landscape of the city. While this is not a narrated tour, the staff is knowledgeable enough to answer any questions you may have about the picturesque views. Once the boat docks guests are encouraged to take a few bottles of water and some snacks to enjoy while exploring Bear Mountain State Park. The park is an incredible 5,205 acres of lush green foliage, with a beautiful lakefront picnic area, a swimming pool, a zoo, and trailside museums. Visiting any of the park amenities requires some legwork so dress very comfortably. For our day out we decided to visit the zoo and museums. It was a 20-minute uphill hike to the zoo. This hike is no joke. Given the mountain air and steep climb, it could be difficult for some. If bringing young children we recommend a small lightweight stroller if possible. The zoo is small and quaint with an assortment of regional beasts and fowls including brown bears, wild turkeys, and a bald eagle. The museums are an eclectic mix of historical items and natural elements. If the hike uphill is too daunting we recommend a short trek to the lakeside picnic area. It’s a lovely scenic space where you can walk and enjoy nature, take a ride in a paddle boat or just relax by the lake. If you are an experienced hiker take full advantage of their trails and immerse yourself in nature. The park is a self-guided endeavor. If you stay on the pathways it is pretty easy to navigate. There are signs everywhere that point to areas of interest and various park services.
As we headed back to the city, we enjoyed another tasty meal with Chef Wendy. After our day in the park, we were famished. For our excursion back to Manhattan, the spread included Cheddar Wurst, Barbecue Chicken, Kale salad, and several other tasty treats. If you’re lucky you’ll get to have Chef Wendy’s incredible three cheese mac and cheese, it is drool worthy!
All in all, the voyage to Bear Mountain was a full day experience in which we relaxed hiked enjoyed great food and good company. This day trip is ideal for most dates and family outings. It is an impressive date experience, imagine long romantic walks along the lake, a relaxing cruise and meals all in one. The excursion is also good for families as it provides a full day of activities and some priceless bonding time. Special occasions are also celebrated aboard. On our trip, a large family celebrated their matriarch’s 85th birthday. The group ranged in ages from adolescent to senior and everyone had a great time.
