If you were sitting at home Friday night catching up on your TiVo’d shows, you missed out on a great night of music. Thousands, over the age of 21, crowded into Gotham Hall for a private event sponsored by Heineken and hosted by the sometimes funny comedian Godfrey. While attendees were treated to an open bar of beverages including Heineken Beer, DJ D-Nice and Biz Markie set the hype meter of the night spinning the best of Hip Hop from the 80s to the present.
Hip Hop’s fresh new kid, Wale, kicked off the night performing songs from his highly-anticipated debut album Attention: Deficit including his single Chillin, which features Lady Gaga. UK’s Estelle brought her sass and spunk to the stage performing songs such as No Substitute Love and Come Over from her album Shine. The crowd went crazy when she performed her big hit American Boy. There was no denying, it was a Ludacris crowd. When he stepped out on the stage there was pandemonium. With a career spanning almost 10 years, 6 albums, and countless guest appearances, what do you even perform to make sure everyone’s Luda taste buds are met? To some extent Ludacris was searching for the answer himself, requesting suggestions from the audience. To please the crowd, Ludacris performed snippets of songs like What’s Your Fantasy and Yeah. The highlight of the night was the guest appearance of Nas who performed such songs as New York State of Mind and one of my favorites, Made You Look. The night ended on a higher note than when it began when Ludacris performed Stand Up and Southern Hospitality.
