Friday May 14th 2010, Express celebrated its 30th anniversary with a spectacular outdoor fashion show, at the New York Stock Exchange. With the country in turmoil and still crawling its way out of debt it was a fitting move to have a show the struggling masses could enjoy featuring chic clothes they could afford. Just a few short yards, from the steps of the legendary exchange, made a fitting locale for a brand built on attainability. Aside from its political statement, the decision to show on Wall Street was also a logical maneuver as Express also celebrated going public by ringing the opening bell that very morning.A string of beautiful models strut down the out door runway with a massive screen behind them giving spectators a closer look at the detailing and chic styling of each ensemble. The line up for this event included Victoria’s Secret models Izabel Goulart and Flavia de Oliveira as well as super model Alex Wek. We were delighted to see a smiling and radiant Wek who usually graces the catwalks of high-end brands when she’s not helping to raise awareness about the plight of refugees in her hometown, Sudan.
The look of the day was decidedly relaxed but edgy; glam-rock inspired details dominated the scene. One of our favorite outfits was a relaxed fit jean with delicate black lace appliqué, paired with a ¾ cropped blazer, basic Tee and open toed booties, the perfect balance of relaxed and chic. Another showstopper was a glittering floral mini-dress simply paired with a pair of sky high strappy sandals this was a very sexy night life piece for all the party girls out there.
Not to be out done by their female counterparts, the men’s line had a few uber cute looks of their own. We loved the gray tweed jacket with over sized pockets paired with wrinkled cotton button down and distressed charcoal jeans, a comfortable relaxed wearable ensemble everyday man. Another favorite was a military inspired tan jacket with contrast trim antique gold buttons, worn over a self appliqué vintage tee and dark wash jeans, a decidedly grown up take on a classic silhouette.
In addition to a great show spectators were given “mystery” gift cards as a promotion for the event. The cards held saving from $10 to $75 and were handed out to all in reach. A warm sunny day, a free fashion show and gift cards, a magnificent way to start the weekend, TGIF indeed!
