Last night, Beyonce, Michelle Williams, Estelle, Rapper Big Sean, Tika Sumpter, Maxwell, and Adrienne Ballon, were among the VIP guests that attend the Moet Rose Lounge during the launch celebration for Kelly Rowland’s new album “Here I Am” at the Top of The Standard Hotel. Team JSD was also there and we had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Rowland about Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, X-Factor, and of course the new album…
John Simon Daily: You’ve found considerable success in Europe, mainly working with David Guetta, yet for this album you returned to your R&B roots.. Explain why?
Kelly Rowland: It was more about just being an artist and trying something new. With David, it was meeting him for the first time and having a rapport with him. Then I met The Nervo Twins, we co-wrote and recorded “When Love Takes Over”. I was like are you kidding me god? This is such a great blessing. When I thought about the record, I didn’t want to put myself in the box. As an artist you’re allowed to try different things. People were telling me, Kelly you should do a urban record or a dance record. I decided I wanted to make an album that reflects me. Regardless if I decide to show my dance side, R&B side, or a more sensual side. “Here I Am” reflects me.
JSD: With you and Beyonce releasing albums within weeks of each other, many try to pit the two of you against each other, how has your relationship evolved since Destiny’s Child?
Kelly Rowland: Oh my god, Beyonce is my sister. The only thing that separates us is blood to be honest with you. The cool thing is that I get a chance to talk to her about anything and everything under the sun. I love and trust her period. Contrary to what you read, we are still very close. We love each other and support each other.
JSD: You’ve done some acting in the past, what’s next for Kelly Rowland?
Kelly Rowland: I would love to do another film. I said I wanted to do another movie before the end of the year. Along with the album, X-Factor is keeping me very busy. I can’t get away from it [X-Factor]. Literally, I am doing X-Factor every weekend for the next 2 months. So I am just trying to find the time to possibly do a movie. If not this year, hopefully at the top of 2012.
“Here I Am” is available now!
